Chapter 3: Gathering the Fallen

Sarah Jenkins lived in a small, run-down apartment complex in the suburbs of Atlanta. When she opened the door, Evelyn instantly recognized the posture: shoulders hunched, eyes darting, the stance of a woman perpetually waiting for a blow.
""Sarah?"" Evelyn asked quietly.
""Who are you?"" Sarah’s voice trembled.
""My name is Evelyn. Two days ago, I married Marcus Sterling.""
Sarah gasped, stepping back as if Evelyn carried a plague. She tried to slam the door, but Evelyn caught it gently with her palm.
""And two days ago, I left him,"" Evelyn continued, her voice radiating a calm, grounding frequency. ""I dislocated his shoulder when he came at me with a bat, and I walked off the ship. I know what he did to you, Sarah.""
Sarah froze. Tears immediately welled in her eyes. ""He’ll kill you. You can't talk about him. The NDA—""
""The NDA covers your marriage,"" Evelyn said. ""It doesn't cover mine. And it doesn't cover a criminal conspiracy. May I come in?""
Reluctantly, Sarah opened the door. The apartment was sparse but immaculately clean. Over cheap tea, Evelyn told Sarah everything. She didn't embellish. She spoke of Marcus not as a terrifying monster, but as a pathetic, predictable coward who relied on money and fear to compensate for his own weakness.
""He's a bully, Sarah,"" Evelyn said softly. ""And bullies only thrive in the dark.""
""What do you want from me?"" Sarah whispered, clutching her mug. ""I don't have money to fight his lawyers. I just want to be left alone.""
""I don't want your money, and I don't want you to fight him in court yet,"" Evelyn said. She reached into her bag and pulled out a thick envelope. ""This is fifty thousand dollars in cash. I took it from his personal safe before I left. It's yours. Use it to pay off your debts.""
Sarah stared at the money, paralyzed. ""Why are you doing this?""
""Because healing doesn't happen in isolation,"" Evelyn leaned forward, her hazel eyes locking onto Sarah's. ""I train people to survive, Sarah. Not just physical combat. Mental endurance. Taking back the space you occupy in the world. I'm going to find the other women he hurt. And together, we are going to make sure Marcus Sterling never raises his hand to another woman again. But I need you to be brave one more time. I need you to tell me how his father’s company hides the abuse payouts.""
Sarah looked at the envelope, then at Evelyn. For the first time in three years, the deep, paralyzing fear in her chest loosened. She saw the woman sitting across from her—a woman who had looked the monster in the eye and broken him.
Slowly, Sarah reached out and took the envelope. ""He uses a shell company in Delaware. Let me get my notes.""

A small, quiet smile touched Evelyn’s lips. The war had officially begun.
