Chapter 4 - The Voice on the Tape

The red light of the classroom telephone blinked frantically as Mrs. Gable hammered the receiver against her palm, but the earpiece emitted nothing save for a harsh, unbroken static hiss. The internal communication lines of the elementary school had been cleanly severed.
Jax took a slow, measured step forward, placing himself squarely between Lucas and his daughter. The air in the room felt thick, heavy with the suffocating weight of secrets that had followed him across continents, tracking him down to a brightly lit third-grade classroom in Virginia.
"Where did you get that tape?" Jax demanded, his voice a low, threatening rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.
"From the same archive that classified your entire rescue operation as a training exercise," Lucas replied, his smile widening just enough to reveal a jagged scar running along his jawline. He tossed the cassette gently from hand to hand, the magnetic ribbon inside shifting with a soft, ominous rustle. "You remember Firebase Alpha, don't you, Sergeant? You remember the radio call you made at 0200 hours asking for emergency extraction while your entire squad was being wiped out by friendly artillery fire?"
"That artillery strike wasn't friendly," Jax said through gritted teeth, every muscle in his body coiled for violence. "It was targeted on our exact GPS coordinates. Coordinates that only command and our logistics officer had access to."
"And who do you think routed those coordinates through the secure relay?" Lucas stepped closer, stopping just three feet away, ignoring Mrs. Gable’s frantic threats from across the room. "You thought you were sent home as a hero because you survived the blast. But look at the date on that cassette, Jax. Listen to who was on the other end of the radio frequency when you begged for help."
Lily clutched Jax’s belt loop, her small frame shaking violently. "Dad... please. Let's just go home. I don't like this man. He smells like the dark."
Jax reached back blindly, his warm, calloused hand covering Lily’s trembling fingers to reassure her, even as his eyes remained locked on the cassette tape in Lucas's hand. "Don't listen to him, Lily. Everything is going to be fine. Just keep your eyes on me."
"You can shield her eyes, Sergeant, but you can't shield her ears forever," Lucas sneered. He pressed his thumb against the plastic housing of the tape, clicking the play button on a small pocket recorder he had palmed from his jumpsuit pocket.
Static hissed from the tiny speaker, followed by the distant, unmistakable sound of heavy mortar fire echoing across a barren valley. Then, a voice cut through the noise—a voice that made Jax’s blood run instantly cold. It wasn't an insurgent commander, and it wasn't a desperate private.
It was the calm, methodical voice of Colonel Harris, Jax’s commanding officer back at the Pentagon, giving a direct order to fire upon their own position.
“Target confirmed. Erase the perimeter. Leave no witnesses to the supply discrepancy.”

Before Jax could lunge forward to smash the recorder, the classroom windows behind Lucas suddenly shattered inward in a shower of glittering glass.
