Chapter 10: Unearthing the Truth

The morning sun broke through the heavy grey clouds, casting long, golden beams of light across the damp lawns and manicured boxwood hedges of Ashwood Estate. Inside the sprawling, high-security study, the atmosphere was thick with quiet concentration. The shattered front doors of the mansion had already been temporarily boarded up by estate maintenance crews, but the digital and physical evidence recovered from the federal raid lay scattered across Ethan’s mahogany executive desk.
Ethan sat in his leather armchair, reviewing a series of encrypted data files transferred directly from Director Hayes’s tactical briefcase. Across the desk sat Leo, wrapped in a comfortable oversized wool sweater that belonged to one of Ethan’s distant childhood memories, sipping a warm cup of herbal tea. The boy looked significantly better after a full night of uninterrupted sleep in the secure guest suite, though the deep caution in his big eyes remained a permanent fixture of his survival instinct.
“According to these manifests, the facility was running illegal neural-mapping trials under the guise of an adolescent behavioral diagnostics clinic,” Ethan explained quietly, scrolling through a digital document on his tablet. He looked up, meeting Leo’s gaze. “They implanted a micro-transponder at the base of your neck to track cognitive stress responses during memory retention tests.”
Leo instinctively reached up, his small fingers brushing the tender skin just beneath his hairline. He winced slightly, the phantom memory of cold steel and sterile examination rooms flashing behind his eyes.
“They said if I told anyone what we saw in the white rooms, my memories would be erased permanently,” Leo whispered, staring down into his teacup. “Kids who tell the truth never come back.”
Ethan set the tablet down on the desk with a firm clack. He stood up, walked around the mahogany furniture, and knelt beside Leo’s chair, bringing himself down to eye level just as he had done on the wet pavement. He gently placed his hand over the boy’s trembling fingers, drawing them away from the back of his neck.
“That ends today, Leo,” Ethan said, his voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable conviction. “No one is going to erase anything. Your memories belong to you, your truth belongs to you, and your future belongs to you. In twenty-four hours, my medical team will safely remove that transponder in a fully sterilized, certified hospital environment—not one of their underground labs. You will be completely free.”
Leo stared at Ethan, his lower lip trembling as the immense psychological weight he had carried for years finally began to fracture. For the first time in his young life, he realized that protection wasn't an illusion, and that an adult’s promise could actually be trusted. A single tear escaped his eye, tracking down his cheek, but there was no fear in it—only profound, overwhelming relief.
“Will you stay with me during the procedure?” Leo asked softly, his voice cracking with vulnerability.
“I wouldn't dream of being anywhere else,” Ethan answered immediately, squeezing the boy’s hand gently. “I’ll be right beside you every single second.”
The intercom on the executive desk chimed softly, breaking the intimate silence of the study. Ethan tapped the speaker button with his free hand.
“Mr. Miller,” Director Hayes’s voice crackled through the encrypted audio channel. “We’ve secured the primary server bank from the downtown facility. The master encryption keys are locked, but our cyber-forensics team is downloading the complete archive now. The individuals who authorized the extraction order have been identified at the federal level. Warrants are being signed as we speak.”
“Good,” Ethan replied coldly. “Ensure every single one of them is prosecuted to the absolute limit of the law. I want no loopholes left open.”

“Understood, Ethan. The cleanup is underway. But you should know, the corporate board behind this initiative has deep pockets and powerful political connections. They won't go down quietly.”
“Let them try,” Ethan said, his dark eyes flashing with fierce resolve. “They’ve already lost.”
