Chapter 14

The weeks following the neighborhood barbecue passed with a quiet, harmonious grace that Maplewood Estates hadn’t experienced in years. The crisp autumn air gradually gave way to the sharp, bracing chill of early winter, frosting the lawns with silver each morning before the sun rose.

For Brenda, the arrival of December brought a major milestone: her doctor finally cleared her to have the heavy white plaster cast removed from her right ankle. Walking into the orthopedic clinic with her cane, she felt a profound sense of physical and emotional liberation. When the technician finally sawed through the plaster and freed her leg, the initial stiffness quickly gave way to the thrilling realization that she was whole again.

That afternoon, she drove herself home for the first time in nearly two months, feeling the familiar hum of the steering wheel beneath her hands. As she pulled her car into her driveway and stepped out onto the clean concrete, she took a deep breath of the cold winter air, feeling a lightness in her spirit that she hadn't felt since before Mark passed away.

Across the driveway, Arthur’s garage door was open, revealing his classic car parked neatly inside. He was sweeping up a few fallen leaves near his workbench when he heard her car door slam. He looked up, dropping his broom, and walked over toward the property line, a broad smile on his face.

"I see the cast is officially gone," Arthur called out, walking across the invisible boundary line without hesitation.

"It is," Brenda said, stepping forward to meet him, her steps steady and sure, completely free of crutches or hesitation. "No more plastic, no more walking boots, and no more excuses."

"Good," Arthur chuckled, shaking her hand warmly. "Because the first snow is forecasted for next week, and I expect you to be out here shoveling your half of the driveway."

Brenda laughed, the sound ringing out clear and bright in the quiet afternoon air. "Don't push your luck, Arthur. I might still be recovering my strength."

"Well, if you need help with the snowblower, you know where to find me," Arthur said, his tone casual and warm. "My door is always open. No lawyers required."
