Chapter 12

The crisp autumn air settled over the suburban cul-de-sac by late September, turning the leaves on the grand oak tree into brilliant shades of gold and crimson. The swimming pool had been covered for the season with a heavy dark tarp, secured by water bags along the edges, marking the official end of summer. Yet, the connection forged between the two houses remained as warm and active as ever. Eleanor was inside her kitchen, organizing her spice jars—a comforting habit she still enjoyed, though the color-coding was no longer compulsive—when her smartphone chimed with a call from an unfamiliar number. She wiped her hands on a dish towel and picked up the device, tapping the green answer button. “Hello, this is Eleanor Vance.” A deep, professional voice responded on the other end. “Good morning, Mrs. Vance. My name is Detective Keller with the county sheriff’s department. I’m calling regarding an inquiry into the title history of the property adjacent to yours—specifically, the disputed easement involving the Miller residence.” Eleanor’s posture stiffened slightly, a vestige of her old anxiety flaring up. “That dispute was resolved weeks ago by the municipal inspector. The property line is settled.” “I understand that, ma’am, but a secondary audit of the county records division has uncovered a serious irregularity involving the surveyor who conducted your inspection, Arthur Pendelton. He’s currently under investigation for falsifying boundary reports in several suburban districts in exchange for financial incentives from local developers.” Eleanor’s breath caught in her throat. Her grip on the smartphone tightened until her knuckles turned white. “Falsifying reports? Are you saying the property line wasn't actually moved in nineteen-ninety-two?” “That’s exactly what we’re investigating, Mrs. Vance. According to the original microfilms from the nineteen-seventies, your initial claim was correct. That strip of land, including a portion of where the pool pump sits, legally belongs to your parcel.” The detective paused, letting the heavy implication hang in the air. “We will need your formal statement and access to your property files for our ongoing review.” Eleanor stared blankly at the kitchen wall, her mind racing. The victory she had fought so bitterly for, and had eventually surrendered for the sake of peace, had just been handed back to her on a silver platter. But the thought didn’t bring the triumphant rush she would have expected a month ago; it brought a cold, heavy knot of dread in her stomach.
