Chapter 5

By three o’clock that afternoon, the emergency board meeting had been convened in the executive conference room. The heavy oak doors were shut tight, keeping out the ambient murmurs of the rest of the firm. Around the polished mahogany table sat five senior partners and the chief financial officer, their faces a mixture of confusion and anxiety. Word had leaked that Arthur was calling an emergency session regarding the flagship downtown commercial project, and in the high-stakes world of real estate development, emergency sessions never brought good news.
Arthur stood at the head of the table, dressed impeccably in his dark blue shirt, though his usual commanding presence was replaced by a grim, somber demeanor. Clara sat near the center, the black binder open before her, while Julian stood respectfully by the window, watching the room with sharp, observant eyes.
“Thank you all for coming on such short notice,” Arthur began, his voice steady despite the dry tightness in his throat. He did not beat around the bush or soften the blow with corporate euphemisms. “I have called this meeting to report a critical failure in our oversight protocols regarding the structural engineering of the downtown site.”
A murmur instantly rippled through the room. Marcus Vance, the senior managing partner, leaned forward, narrowing his eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. “What kind of failure, Arthur? Pouring issues? Concrete curing delays?”
“Worse,” Arthur said, gesturing toward Clara. She slid the black binder across the polished wood toward Marcus. “Months ago, facing impending financial penalties from supply chain delays, an executive decision was made to alter the load-bearing reinforcement specifications for the primary eastern columns.”
Marcus opened the binder, his eyes scanning the technical revisions and the signature at the bottom of the page. As comprehension dawned on him, the color drained from his face. He looked up slowly, staring at Arthur with a mixture of disbelief and absolute horror. “You signed off on this? Are you out of your mind? This violates every municipal building code in the state. If the city finds out—”
May you like
“The city is finding out right now,” Clara interrupted calmly, her voice cutting through the rising panic of the partners. She placed the envelope containing Julian’s notification letter on the table. “We have already prepared the self-reporting documentation for the municipal inspector’s office. We are halting construction effective immediately to begin a full, independent remediation process.”
Chaos erupted in the conference room. Shouts of protest, anxiety, and outrage bounced off the soundproofed walls. Partners stood up, arguing over liability, stock depreciation, and impending lawsuits. Through it all, Arthur remained standing at the head of the table, refusing to duck his head or deflect the blame. He had made the bed; now he had to lie in it. Julian watched his father weather the storm, realizing that true strength wasn't about never falling, but about having the courage to stand up and face the wreckage you created.
