Chapter 6: The Inside Informant

Elena pushed the heavy oak door open another few inches, motioning for Clara to step inside. The woman in the dark blazer hesitated for a fraction of a second before crossing the threshold, her heels clicking softly against the hardwood floor of the entryway. She looked around the dimly lit foyer as if expecting someone to step out of the shadows, then turned back to Elena with a desperate urgency in her eyes.
“Keep your voice down,” Clara whispered, pulling off her leather gloves and dropping them onto the hall table. “Arthur thinks I’m still at the firm reviewing the closing documents for the buyers. If he finds out I came here, my career—and quite possibly my safety—is over.”
Elena led her back into the bright kitchen, where the blue folder and the hidden notebook still rested on the wooden table. She gestured for Clara to sit, remaining standing herself, her arms crossed over her white shirt.
“You were part of his team this morning,” Elena pointed out, her tone skeptical. “You stood in the background while he tried to intimidate me out of my own family home.”
“I had to play my part,” Clara said, her voice shaking as she sat down and gripped the edge of the table. “If I had shown any sympathy toward you during that meeting, Arthur would have cut me out of the operation immediately. But I can't be part of this anymore, Elena. When I saw you standing your ground today, and when I realized the scale of what they actually forged... it crossed a line.”
“What did they forge, Clara?” Elena asked, stepping closer.
“Everything from the second trust amendment onward,” Clara said quickly, leaning forward. “Arthur didn’t just have your aunt sign a property transfer; he had her sign a complete revocation of her original estate plan. The original will left this entire property, plus the family trust funds, to you and a local heritage foundation. The new document names a shell company controlled by Arthur and two municipal board members as primary beneficiaries.”
Elena stared at her. Although she had suspected foul play, hearing the raw mechanics of the theft laid out by an insider confirmed the worst. “And the probate judge approved this?”
“Dr. Vance’s medical assessment was submitted under seal,” Clara explained, her hands twisting in her lap. “The judge never saw the actual patient; he relied entirely on the sworn affidavits provided by Arthur’s medical proxy. It’s a closed legal loop designed specifically to bypass family notification.”

“How do you know all this?” Elena asked, narrowing her eyes. “You’re an associate at the firm, but this level of collusion requires direct complicity.”
“I’m the compliance officer assigned to Arthur’s division,” Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “My job was supposed to be auditing the transactions to ensure legal compliance. Instead, I found the audit trails where Arthur doctored the medical reports and funneled retainer fees into off-shore accounts. I kept copies of everything on an encrypted drive. If Arthur goes down for fraud, I go down with him for conspiracy unless I turn state’s evidence first.”
