Chapter 11: Archives of Betrayal

The archive room smelled of aged leather, dried ink, and historical preservation. Margaret walked over to a mahogany reading table in the center of the room and switched on a brass desk lamp. The pool of light illuminated a stack of thick manila envelopes tied with red string—dozens of them, bearing familiar postmarks spanning from 1988 all the way to last year.

Claire approached the table slowly, her fingers trembling slightly as she touched the top envelope. The handwriting on the label was unmistakably Robert’s—neat, precise, and entirely devoid of warmth.

“Thirty-five years of surveillance,” Claire murmured, her voice laced with disgust. “Every birthday, every school report card, every doctor’s visit—he packaged my entire life up like a quarterly business report and mailed it to strangers.”

“To your family, Claire,” Margaret corrected gently, standing nearby. “Evelyn was your mother. She didn't want to abandon you; she was forced out by a family that cared more about reputation than blood. Robert offered a way out, but he twisted the terms to serve his own greed. He used those reports as leverage to ensure our financial backing never dried up.”

Elena picked up one of the letters from the stack, carefully sliding the heavy cardstock out of its envelope. It was handwritten by Evelyn Vance, dated June 12, 2000—Claire’s tenth birthday.

“Dear Robert, Thank you for the photograph of Claire on her bicycle. She has my eyes, I think. Please ensure she knows, when the time is right, that she was loved from afar. Do not let her grow up believing she was unwanted.”

Tears blurred Elena’s vision as she read the words. She looked over at Claire, who was reading a letter dated just two years prior, detailing her college graduation and first job promotion.

“He lied to both sides,” Elena said, her voice shaking with restrained rage. “He told me I couldn't have children safely, and he told Evelyn that I raised you as my own while he acted as our protector. He played every angle to secure his wealth and his status.”

“A clever climber,” Margaret admitted without remorse. “But ambition without a moral compass always collapses under its own weight. It just took thirty-five years for the cracks to finally give way.”

“Where is he now?” Claire asked, looking up from the letters to meet Margaret’s steady gaze.

“He’s probably panicking,” Margaret replied bluntly. “When he realized you found the blue box in the attic, he knew his entire empire of lies was evaporating. He’s spent his whole life protecting his secrets, and now he has nowhere left to run.”

Elena folded Evelyn’s letter and placed it carefully inside her purse. She looked at Claire, whose expression had hardened into a mask of absolute resolve.

“We’re taking these,” Claire stated, gesturing to the stack of envelopes.

“They belong to you,” Margaret said, stepping aside. “Take them all. And if you wish to know more about Evelyn... her room at the end of this hall remains exactly as she left it.”
