Chapter 13: Breach of the Safehouse

The unmarked transport van sped through the rain-slicked downtown streets, its tinted windows shielding the occupants from the gray, indifferent morning light. In the back seat, Clara finally allowed herself to exhale, loosening her coat slightly to let the baby breathe fresh air. The white envelope lay safely on Thomas’s lap, the silver wax seal gleaming under the dim overhead light of the van.

They arrived twenty minutes later at a nondescript brick building tucked away in the government district—the state attorney general’s secure intake facility. The driver pulled directly into a gated subterranean garage, the heavy security doors closing shut behind them with a resounding thud.

State Police Investigator Reynolds, a tall, imposing man in a plain grey suit and trench coat, met them as they stepped out of the van. He shook hands firmly with Thomas Vance before turning his gaze toward Clara and the baby.

“Ms. Miller? I’m Investigator Reynolds. The Attorney General is reviewing the file right now. Let’s get you inside before Elena’s legal team realizes we’ve left their jurisdiction.”

They hurried inside the secure elevator, riding up to the fourth floor, where a team of federal and state prosecutors had gathered in a large conference room. Spread across the long mahogany table were digital monitors displaying corporate tax filings, birth records, and the fertility clinic’s physical audit logs.

Clara sat down at the head of the table, gently rocking her baby. Thomas placed the white envelope squarely in the center of the mahogany surface.

“Before we officially file the criminal indictments for fraud and coercion, we need to break the seal on this evidence and verify the notarized signatures for the record,” Investigator Reynolds stated, pulling a pair of white cotton gloves from his pocket.

Clara nodded slowly. “Do it.”

Reynolds carefully slid a letter opener beneath the heavy silver wax seal, breaking it with a soft crack that echoed loudly in the silent room. He unfolded the thick parchment inside, scanning the notarized medical signatures and the genetic profiling breakdown.

A heavy silence filled the conference room as Reynolds read through the findings. He looked up, a slow, grim smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“It’s airtight,” Reynolds said. “Not only is this child completely unrelated to the Sterling bloodline, but the clinic records explicitly document Elena’s direct orders to falsify the donor database. We have everything we need to issue an immediate arrest warrant for Elena Sterling.”
