Chapter 7: The Freight Shaft

The metallic hum of Service elevator B sounded like a dying jet engine in the suffocating silence of the sub-basement corridor. Alessandra clutched the newborn tightly against her chest, her bare feet muffled only by thick wool socks as she sprinted down the concrete hallway. The air smelled of damp earth, industrial cleaning fluid, and stale exhaust fumes—a far cry from the expensive potpourri of the upper-floor dining room. Every shadow stretched out like a grasping hand, and every drip of condensation from the overhead pipes sounded dangerously like approaching footsteps.

Her mind replayed the terrifying events of the evening. She had managed to slip out of the guest nursery while Jonathan was engaged in a tense phone call in his study. She knew she had mere minutes before her absence was discovered and the smart-home locks were engaged, trapping her permanently inside the apartment unit. The elevator doors groaned open with a shudder, revealing a cramped, stainless-steel box covered in scuff marks and grease stains.

Stepping inside, Alessandra slammed her palm against the red button marked GARAGE - LEVEL B, holding her breath as the heavy doors dragged shut with a metallic screech. The descent was agonizingly slow, the cable system groaning under the weight of the massive building above it. Each foot the car dropped felt like a layer of armor peeling away from her, exposing her raw and unprotected to the outside world. She had no money, no car keys, and no shoes other than her socks. She was entirely dependent on Julian’s vague promise of an escape route.

When the elevator finally lurched to a halt, the doors parted an inch short of fully opening, revealing a dark, cavernous concrete parking garage lit only by flickering fluorescent tubes. Shadows danced across rows of luxury sedans and silent SUVs.

"Julian?" she whispered into the damp chill, her voice trembling uncontrollably.

A low groan answered her from behind a concrete support pillar near the far corner of the garage. Heart pounding, Alessandra hurried toward the sound, her eyes straining against the dim light. There, slumped against the damp concrete wall beside a grey sedan, sat Julian. His gray dress shirt was stained with dark blood around the collar, and a nasty purple bruise swelled across the entire left side of his jaw. He looked up, his eyes bloodshot but fiercely alert.
