Chapter 6

Realizing that the foyer was no longer a battleground but a sacred space of long-overdue reckoning, David quietly gestured toward the spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area that branched off from the entryway. "Let's move away from the stairs," David urged softly, his voice devoid of its earlier aggression and replaced by a fragile, tentative curiosity. "Martha, let's sit at the table. Jax... bring the boy." Eleanor stood frozen near the banister, her arms still crossed, shaking her head in silent protest as the rest of the family slowly migrated toward the warm, sunlit kitchen. She clearly felt betrayed by the sudden softening of her husband and mother-in-law, refusing to accept that a fancy house and a vintage photograph could instantly wipe away a decade of abandonment.
At the polished oak dining table, Martha carefully laid the faded photograph down next to a vase of fresh yellow flowers, staring at it as if it were a fragile relic from an ancient civilization. Jax pulled out a chair for Leo, helping the boy sit down before taking a seat directly beside him. He kept his large, tattooed hands flat on the wooden surface, anchoring himself against the rising tide of vulnerability. David remained standing at the head of the table, leaning slightly forward on his palms. "You bought this house," David began, his voice measured and quiet, "in this specific neighborhood, right down the street from where Sarah lived out her final years. Why?"
Jax took a slow, deep breath, his eyes meeting David's steady gaze without flinching. "Because I didn't want to hide anymore," Jax answered honestly. "When Sarah passed away six months ago, Leo entered the foster system in Nevada. Social services contacted me because my name was finally back on a registry after I cleaned up my act three years ago. I fought tooth and nail for custody. But I made a promise to myself, and to Sarah’s memory, that if I got him back, I would bring him home to where his roots are. This house isn't just wood and drywall, David. It's my commitment to this family that I am here to stay, and I am ready to do whatever it takes to earn a place in Leo's life—and yours."
