Chapter 12: Entering the Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Sterling Hotel was a masterpiece of crystal chandeliers, gilded moldings, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering city skyline. Hundreds of guests milled about sipping champagne from crystal flutes, lost in the intoxicating hum of privilege and self-congratulatory applause. At the center of the elevated stage stood Eleanor, draped in a magnificent velvet gown embroidered with silver thread, holding a wireless microphone as she delivered her keynote address about the enduring legacy of family honor and philanthropic giving.
Julian slipped through the heavy velvet side doors unnoticed, blending seamlessly into the back of the massive crowd. He wore his dark green sweatshirt amidst a sea of black-tie formality, a deliberate and jarring contrast that immediately signaled he did not belong. Yet, in the dim lighting of the ballroom's rear, no one paid him any mind, assuming he was part of the catering staff or an audiovisual technician.
He looked toward the front of the stage. Standing just off to the side, sipping her trademark glass of Cabernet, was Evelyn, wearing an emerald-silk dress that mirrored the cold, calculating expression she had worn the night Julian carried Lily away. Neither of them had any idea that the ground beneath their feet was about to give way.
Julian checked his watch. Exactly 8:45 PM.
Across the room, David Miller was sitting quietly at a back corner table with a laptop connected directly to the hotel’s primary audio-visual routing system—a backdoor access point David had secured through an old contact. Julian caught David’s eye across the sea of heads. David gave a subtle, almost imperceptible nod.
On stage, Eleanor reached the crescendo of her speech. “Tonight, we celebrate not just a foundation, but an unbreakable lineage of integrity, power, and devotion to family values that will guide this institution for generations to come.”
The ballroom erupted into thunderous applause. Glasses clinked. Smiles flashed across hundreds of influential faces.
Julian reached into his breast pocket, pulled out the secure flash drive, and took a slow, deep breath. This was it. The moment of truth.

With a steady hand, he walked briskly toward the main media mixing console at the side of the ballroom, where the bewildered sound technician was suddenly startled by a masked figure tapping him on the shoulder. Before the technician could protest, Julian inserted the flash drive into the master playback port and hit enter on the command prompt David had pre-programmed.
Suddenly, Eleanor’s voice on the stage microphone cut out with a sharp, electronic screech. The applause died instantly, replaced by a tense, heavy silence as every head in the ballroom turned toward the massive projection screens behind the stage.
