Chapter 10: The Prodigal Brother

The beam of Clara’s flashlight illuminated the worn leather jacket, unruly dark hair, and sharp, familiar features of her estranged older brother, David. Twelve years of self-imposed exile in remote activist communities had weathered his skin and left deep lines around his eyes, but the intense, unyielding gaze of a Sterling remained completely unchanged. He did not look like a vagrant; he looked like a man who had traded inherited wealth for absolute moral clarity.

Thomas slowly lowered his hand from his coat, though his posture remained tense, recognizing the family resemblance instantly.

"You always were too observant for your own good, little sister," David said, his voice carrying a dry, melancholic warmth as he took a cautious step forward into the light. "I figured you would find your way here eventually. Dad never could resist hiding his skeletons in the exact spot where he buried them."

Clara lowered her flashlight slightly, the glare dimming between them. "You left a mess, David. You abandoned everything, leaving Julian and Beatrice to rot the empire from the inside out while you played revolutionary in the wilderness."

David let out a quiet, bitter laugh, shaking his head. "I didn't abandon the empire, Clara. I escaped a prison. I knew what Grandfather did to the Vance family. I found these exact documents a month before I walked out that front door. I gave Dad an ultimatum: return the land to the rightful heirs or I go public. He chose the company. So I chose my soul."

"And yet here you are," Clara countered sharply, gesturing toward the clean manila folder on the desk. "Returning precisely when the house of cards is collapsing. Are you here to salvage what's left, or to drive the final nail into the coffin?"

David walked slowly toward the desk, resting his hand gently on the water-stained land deeds. "I'm here to offer you a choice that Dad never gave me," David said softly, looking directly into Clara's eyes. "Agent Vance is closing in. She has a warrant signed by a federal judge to excavate the foundation of this very manor within forty-eight hours. When she uncovers the truth, the Sterling name will be dragged through the mud permanently. Every asset will be seized, every account frozen, and thousands of innocent employees will lose their livelihoods overnight."

"Unless we hand over the deeds voluntarily," Clara realized, her mind racing through the legal and economic implications. "We surrender the land, establish a multimillion-dollar restitution trust for the Vance descendants, and cooperate fully with the federal investigation before they can slap us with criminal conspiracy charges."

David smiled faintly, a genuine expression of pride touching his weathered features. "Exactly. You have the business acumen that Dad always lacked, Clara. You know how to pivot when the market crashes. But you have to be the one to sign the surrender papers. If Dad does it, he’ll try to negotiate a corrupt loophole. If you do it, it becomes an act of redemption."

Thomas cleared his throat softly, stepping forward into the circle of light. "Excuse me, Miss Sterling, but exterior sensors indicate multiple vehicles approaching the perimeter gates. Federal black-and-whites. Agent Vance arrived sooner than anticipated."
