Chapter 11: Confronting the Past

Tuesday morning brought a pale, overcast sky that cast a soft, diffused light across the sprawling lawns of the Sterling estate. Arthur spent the early hours walking the gravel paths alone, letting the crisp morning air clear his mind before the inevitable media storm resumed outside the gates. As he reached the edge of the formal rose garden—the exact spot where he and Julianna had exchanged vows a decade earlier—he found a small, velvet-lined box resting on the stone bench. It was Julianna’s wedding band, left behind intentionally or dropped in haste during her chaotic exit from the property on the night of the gala.

He picked up the heavy platinum ring, feeling the cold metal against his palm. It was embedded with tiny, flawless diamonds that caught the pale sunlight, sparkling with the illusion of eternal commitment. He remembered the grand reception, the applause of society elites, and the absolute certainty he had felt about their shared future. How easily people could build magnificent facades over foundations of sand and deception. He slipped the ring into his coat pocket just as he heard footsteps crunching on the gravel behind him.

Clara walked up the path, holding a thick manila folder containing the finalized asset freeze orders issued by the federal magistrate earlier that morning. She stopped a few paces away, noticing the thoughtful expression on his face and the slight bulge in his coat pocket. "The federal investigators have seized all of Julianna’s remaining domestic accounts," Clara reported quietly, breaking the silence with her usual professional poise. "The arraignment is scheduled for Thursday morning. Her defense is planning to argue diminished capacity, claiming she was driven to instability by corporate pressure." Arthur let out a bitter, low laugh, shaking his head slowly. "Diminished capacity implies she didn't know what she was doing. The security footage tells a very different story. Every movement was calculated down to the second." He turned to face her, his eyes steady and clear. "I’m going to testify at the preliminary hearing, Clara. I won't let her rewrite the narrative to protect her social standing." Clara nodded slowly, her expression supportive and resolute. "Then we will make sure the court sees the exact truth, down to the last frame of that video."
