Chapter 1

The amber liquid in the glass shifted under the warm candlelight of the reception hall. Julian stared at Clara, his jaw tight as the realization of what she had just done settled into his chest. Across the white-clothed table, decorated with cascading roses and a stark stone cross mounted on the exposed brick wall, Clara lowered the glass dropper. Her emerald eyes met his with a chilling, unapologetic finality.
“Cheers,” Clara whispered, her voice barely a breath against the ambient murmur of the wedding guests.
Julian didn't hesitate. With a motion so swift it blurred in the dim light, he swapped the poisoned wine glass meant for his new bride, Maya, with his own glass of dark Dr Pepper. Maya sat right beside him, completely oblivious, her smile radiant beneath the delicate lace of her veil.
“Cheers,” Julian said, his voice level, hiding the violent tremor in his hands.
Maya turned to her close friend, unaware of the history simmering beneath the surface, and raised her glass. “Oh, my favorite Dr Pepper,” she laughed lightly, taking a generous sip.
Clara mirrored the gesture, her lips curving into a predatory smile as she lifted the swapped glass to her own mouth. Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He watched, breath caught in his throat, as Clara swallowed the dark liquid laced with the fast-acting chemical compound she had smuggled into the venue.
“How’s your drink?” Julian asked, leaning forward, his eyes locked onto her face.
For a second, Clara just stared back, her smile freezing. Then, the color drained entirely from her cheeks. She slammed the glass down, coughing violently, her hand flying to her throat as a look of sheer, unadulterated horror distorted her features.
“Disgusting,” Clara choked out, gasping for air as her eyes bulged in absolute panic.

Maya dropped her fork, turning in alarm. “Clara? Are you okay? What’s wrong with your drink?”
Clara couldn't answer. She clawed at her own collar, her breathing turning shallow and ragged as she slumped backward in her chair, staring directly at Julian with a look of pure betrayal before her eyes rolled back.
