Chapter 8

The piercing wail of the security klaxon reverberated off the sterile white walls, bouncing through the long corridor with disorienting force. The pristine white flooring was suddenly bathed in sweeping arcs of crimson light from automated strobe units mounted near the ceiling.
"We've been compromised!" the vendor yelled over the deafening noise, grabbing the girl's shoulder and pulling her back toward the open access door. "The moment you turned that key, it triggered a silent alarm routed straight to central security!"
"Don't run!" the girl shouted back, yanking her arm free with surprising strength. She sprinted down the hallway toward a junction box embedded in the glass wall. "If we go back now, the blast doors will seal the exit anyway! Our only chance is to reach the main server room and upload the financial records before they lock down the mainframe!"
With no other choice, the vendor cursed under his breath and sprinted after her, his heavy sneakers squeaking against the polished floor.
They rounded a sharp corner just as a heavy steel security shutter dropped from the ceiling fifty yards ahead, slamming into the concrete with a thunderous crash that shook the dust from the air conditioning ducts. Another shutter began to descend from the opposite end of the corridor, threatening to trap them in a deadly hundred-foot metal cage.
"Slide!" the girl screamed, dropping flat onto her stomach.
She threw herself forward, skidding across the slick white floor just as the second steel barrier slammed downward with bone-shattering force, missing her heels by mere inches. The vendor dove right behind her, sliding hard underneath the descending wall and scraping his elbows raw against the abrasive concrete.
They rolled to a halt on the other side, gasping for breath in the chilled air of the inner archive corridor.
Rising slowly to their feet, they found themselves standing directly before a massive glass-walled chamber filled with rows of humming server racks glowing with rhythmic blue and green LED lights. This was the heart of Sterling Global's financial network—the digital vault containing every transaction, bribe, and shell company ledger the firm had accumulated over the past decade.
The girl approached the primary terminal console embedded in the center of the room. The screen was locked behind a complex biometric login screen requiring both a retina scan and a six-digit administrative passcode.
"It's locked," the vendor said, shining his flashlight over the dark glass of the monitor in frustration. "Unless you happen to have Victoria Sterling's eyeballs in your pocket, we're completely locked out."
"I don't need her eyes," the girl replied calmly. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished brass coin—the exact same coin she had used to buy her hotdog earlier that afternoon.
With steady, calculated movements, she unscrewed the hollow center of the brass coin, extracting a microscopic SD card hidden inside the metal. Without hesitation, she inserted the tiny chip into the USB port beneath the console terminal.
A line of green code instantly flooded the black screen, bypassing the biometric login entirely.

"Initializing override," a synthesized robotic voice echoed through the silent server room.
Before the download progress bar could even reach ten percent, the heavy steel door at the far end of the server room hissed open. Victoria Sterling stepped into the room, flanked by two armed security guards.
