Chapter 4: Confrontation in the Study

Arthur closed the study door behind him with a deliberate, echoing click. He did not sit down across from Clara; instead, he remained standing near the bookshelf, towering over her with a cold, analytical gaze. Clara shifted uncomfortably under his inspection, her fingers nervously twisting the gold bracelet on her wrist. The warmth of the fire did nothing to thaw the freezing atmosphere of the room. "The green bottle in the pantry, Clara," Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a quiet authority that brooked no argument. "Lily mentioned it. She saw you handling it in the dark. Care to explain what kind of herbal supplement requires secrecy and a panicked reaction when my daughter tries to warn me?"

Clara’s face drained of what little color remained. The polished elegance she usually wore like armor began to crumble completely. She stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor. "You're interrogating me based on the ramblings of a toddler?" she snapped, her voice rising in defensive hysteria. "Arthur, listen to yourself! You're letting a child's nightmare ruin our lives!" She tried to step past him toward the door, but Arthur didn't budge. He simply extended his arm, blocking her exit. "You haven't answered my question, Clara," he said, his tone unwavering. "What was in that teacup? Because the residue on the floor is currently being collected by our security team for laboratory analysis." That was a bluff, but it hit its mark with devastating precision.

Clara gasped, stumbling backward as if she had been physically struck. Her defiant facade completely dissolved, replaced by a mixture of sheer panic and deep, resentful anger. She slumped back into the armchair, burying her face in her hands for a long, agonizing moment. When she finally looked up, the blonde woman’s eyes were dry, burning with a bitter, desperate fury. "You think you know everything, don't you, Arthur?" she hissed, her voice trembling with suppressed venom. "You think your brilliant career and your perfect little world are untouchable. You never see the cage you built for me. You never see how invisible I became while you played the benevolent lord of this manor." Arthur stared at her, stunned not just by the confession, but by the sheer venom in her tone.
