Chapter 12 - The Iron Trap

The heavy reverberation of the deadbolt sliding home echoed through the cavernous server room like a gunshot. The man in the immaculate gray suit spun around, lowering his weapon just an inch as his brow furrowed in sudden confusion. He strode quickly toward the open doorway, his hard-soled shoes clicking sharply against the concrete floor.
"Check the exterior latch," the man barked over his shoulder to a shadowy figure lingering near the server racks.
Another man stepped forward from the gloom, rushing to the heavy steel door and throwing his full weight against the handle. It didn't budge. The door was securely jammed from the outside, the thick steel bolt fully engaged.
"We’re locked in, boss," the man reported, his voice tight with sudden panic. "Someone chained it from the hallway."
Elena’s cold composure cracked for the first time. Her head whipped around to stare at Sarah, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "What did you do? Who did you bring with us?"
Sarah looked just as stunned as Elena. She shook her head slowly, stepping back until her shoulder brushed against Arthur’s arm. "I didn't bring anyone else, Elena. It was just Arthur and me."
Arthur gripped the brass fireplace poker tighter, his mind racing. If Sarah didn't set this up, and Elena’s syndicate didn't lock the door... then someone else had been following them from the very beginning.
"Miller," Arthur muttered aloud, the realization hitting him like a cold splash of water. "Miller didn't disappear with the money three weeks ago. He’s been playing both sides of this entire operation from the shadows."
Before the man in the gray suit could issue another command, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently and then clicked off entirely, plunging the massive server room into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
The only illumination came from the steady, rhythmic blinking of the server rack status lights—a chaotic sea of red and green digital pulses casting long, erratic shadows across the concrete walls.
"Get to the emergency generator!" the man in the suit shouted, his voice cutting sharply through the sudden silence.
The sound of scrambling footsteps echoed across the room as the syndicate operatives moved blindly in the dark.
Arthur didn't hesitate. In the pitch-black chaos, he dropped low to the ground, pulling Sarah down beside him. He reached out blindly in the dark until his fingers brushed against the cold metal legs of the chair where little Lily was tied.
"Daddy?" Lily’s small voice whispered out of the dark, trembling slightly.
"I've got you, sweetheart," Arthur whispered back, his heart hammering against his ribs. He jammed the end of the brass fireplace poker beneath the heavy nylon zip-ties binding Lily’s wrists, using it as a crude lever. With a sharp, sudden heave, the plastic snapped.
"Over here!" a harsh voice yelled from across the room, accompanied by the sharp, metallic click of a flashlight sliding open.
A bright beam of white light cut through the darkness, sweeping wildly across the server racks before slamming directly onto Arthur, Sarah, and little Lily huddled together on the floor.

Standing ten feet away, holding the high-powered tactical flashlight in one hand and a heavy iron pipe in the other, was Miller himself—smiling a wide, triumphant grin.
