Chapter 11: The Trust Fund and The School

The following Monday marked Emma’s first day at the prestigious St. Ignatius Academy, where Chloe had already been attending kindergarten.

Mateo personally drove the girls in an understated sedan, avoiding the ostentatious convoy to give Emma a normal transition. In the backseat, both girls wore matching navy blue pleated skirts and crisp white collared shirts.

"Look, Emma, that’s where we do finger painting!" Chloe pointed excitedly out the window as they approached the historic brick campus. "And the playground has three big slides!"

Emma adjusted the collar of her new uniform, her eyes wide with nervous excitement. "Will the teacher be mad if I don't know all the letters yet?"

Mateo turned around in his seat, taking her hand. "Emma, you are the smartest little girl I know. If you ever feel scared, Chloe is right there with you. And I'm just one phone call away."

When they arrived at the school gates, the headmistress, Mrs. Sterling, greeted them personally with utmost respect. As the two girls walked in hand-in-hand, their identical giggles echoing down the grand hallway, Mateo felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment that dwarfed every billion-dollar acquisition he had ever signed.

Later that morning, Mateo visited the offices of the Vance Philanthropic Foundation.

"I want to establish a twenty-million-dollar endowment," Mateo instructed his foundation director. "The fund will permanently subsidize housing, childcare, and medical care for single mothers across the state of Illinois. And I want the foundation renamed: The Elena and Emma Trust."
