Chapter 9: The Arrest

The flashing blue and red lights of federal marshals’ vehicles cast an eerie, rhythmic pulse across the magnificent limestone facade of the Plaza Hotel, drawing a flurry of smartphone cameras and whispered gossip from the rapidly gathering crowd outside. Inside the grand foyer, away from the glittering ballroom where the gala continued under a strained cloud of nervous chatter, Arthur Sterling stood with his hands cuffed behind his back. The cold steel bracelets looked entirely out of place against the fine wool of his bespoke tuxedo, yet they represented the undeniable truth of his new reality. Two federal agents flanked him on either side, their expressions utterly indifferent to his frantic, whispering protests. You can’t do this, Arthur muttered through clenched teeth, leaning toward the lead agent as they approached the glass revolving doors. This is a civil dispute over marital assets! It’s a domestic misunderstanding blown out of proportion! The lead agent did not even turn his head, simply nudging Arthur forward toward the open door of a waiting transport van. It’s neither civil nor a misunderstanding, Mr. Sterling, the agent replied coldly. Embezzlement of corporate reserve funds, wire fraud across international borders, and systematic identity theft carry federal penalties that go far beyond a simple domestic disagreement. Your wife signed the warrant authorization herself this afternoon. Arthur stumbled slightly on the marble threshold, catching his breath as the cold night air hit his face. He looked past the flashing lights and saw a sleek black Mercedes limousine parked near the curb. The rear window rolled down smoothly, revealing Julian Sterling watching the spectacle with a cold, impassive stare, flanked by Clara, who looked out from the shadows of the tinted glass with absolute, unyielding calm. Arthur opened his mouth to shout a desperate threat, an ugly promise of retaliation, but the heavy door of the van slammed shut with a definitive thud, cutting off his voice entirely. The vehicle pulled away from the curb, merging into the stream of city traffic, carrying the architect of deception toward a detention center where his carefully constructed lies could no longer protect him.
