Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN THEY CALLED A GOLD DIGGERBy sunrise, Caroline's face was everywhere.

At least, that was how it felt.
Her photograph appeared beside online headlines questioning why a wealthy developer had given a young woman and her siblings a home.
Some articles described her as Vincent's mysterious companion.
Others suggested she had received special treatment.
One gossip website used a particularly cruel headline.
FROM CONSTRUCTION WORKER TO BILLIONAIRE'S MANSION: WHO IS CAROLINE OKAFOR?
Caroline sat at the breakfast table staring at her phone.
Her hands were cold.
Daniel noticed immediately.
“Caroline, what's wrong?”
She locked the screen.
“Nothing you need to worry about.”
Daniel frowned.
“You always say that when something is wrong.”
Before she could answer, Vincent entered.
He looked tired.
Mama Grace placed breakfast on the table.
“Everyone eat first,” she said firmly. “The world will still be foolish afterward.”
Blessing laughed.
But Caroline could barely smile.
Vincent sat beside her.
“I've asked our communications team to address the false claims about the company. Your attorney should handle anything concerning you personally.”
Caroline nodded.
“I don't understand how they got that picture.”
“It was taken outside the house.”
“Does that mean someone has been watching us?”
Vincent's expression tightened.
“We're reviewing our security procedures. No one should be able to interfere with your privacy.”
Daniel looked from one adult to another.
“What's happening?”
Caroline took a breath.
“Some people are spreading stories about my job and why we're living here.”
Blessing looked confused.
“Are they saying bad things?”
“Some are.”
“Why?”
Caroline struggled to answer.
Mama Grace spoke first.
“Because sometimes people hear half a story and decide they know the whole thing.”
Daniel looked at Vincent.
“Are we in trouble?”
“No,” Vincent said. “And neither of you has done anything wrong.”
Caroline reached for Daniel's hand.
“Your job is still to go to school and do your best. Let the adults handle the rest.”
Daniel nodded, but she could see that he was worried.
At the office, things became worse.
A few employees refused to make eye contact.
Others watched Caroline with open curiosity.
Near the elevators, she overheard two women talking.
“She moved into his mansion, and suddenly she gets an office job.”
“I heard she's the reason the project is being investigated.”
Caroline stopped.
She wanted to defend herself.
She wanted to explain how many nights she had gone without sleep making sure Daniel and Blessing had enough food.
She wanted to tell them that she had never asked Vincent for a mansion or a salary she hadn't earned.
But she remembered Mama Grace's words.
Her worth had not changed because of where she lived.
She continued walking.
When she reached Naomi's office, she closed the door and finally allowed herself to cry.
Naomi handed her a tissue.
“You know those stories aren't true.”
Caroline nodded.
“Then why does it hurt so much?”
“Because lies can still hurt even when we know they're lies.”
Caroline wiped her eyes.
“I spent years being treated like I was invisible.”
Naomi listened.
“Now suddenly everyone has an opinion about me.”
“That's unfair.”
“I don't want to be famous. I just want to work.”
Naomi smiled sadly.
“Then let's make sure you get the chance.”
They spent the morning organizing verified records for the independent auditors.
Naomi taught Caroline how financial controls should work.
Every payment needed a legitimate contract.
Every delivery required documentation.
Every material substitution needed technical approval.
And every approval needed to be traceable.
Caroline listened carefully.
She realized something important.
The system itself wasn't the enemy.
The danger came when powerful people were allowed to bypass it without being questioned.
Meanwhile, Vincent faced an emergency board meeting.
Evelyn Hart sat at the head of the table.
Sebastian occupied the chair beside her.
Several investors appeared by video.
Evelyn began.
“The company is experiencing an escalating crisis.”
Vincent nodded.
“I'm aware.”
“The bank has frozen funding, the press is questioning our management, and our partners are demanding answers.”
“We're conducting an independent investigation.”
Sebastian leaned forward.
“An investigation initiated because a newly hired employee accessed records she didn't understand.”
Vincent looked at him.
“That's not what the evidence shows.”
Sebastian spread his hands.
“Then release the evidence.”
“We will release verified findings to the appropriate authorities.”
Evelyn interrupted.
“Gentlemen, this isn't productive.”
She turned toward Vincent.
“We need stability. I propose that we temporarily remove you from direct oversight of Hawthorne Commons.”
Vincent stared at her.
“Remove me?”
“Until the project is stabilized.”
“And who takes responsibility?”
Evelyn looked toward Sebastian.
“Someone with experience managing the company's financial exposure.”
Vincent understood.
“You want Sebastian to control the investigation into transactions his department approved?”
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“I want the company to survive.”
Vincent leaned forward.
“So do I. But not by burying problems that could hurt people.”
The meeting ended without a formal vote.
For the moment, Vincent remained in control.
But he knew the board was divided.
That afternoon, Caroline received a call from Daniel's school.
She answered immediately.
“Hello?”
“Miss Okafor, this is the assistant principal.”
Her heart jumped.
“Is Daniel okay?”
“He's safe. But there was an incident.”
“What kind of incident?”
“An argument with another student became physical.”
Caroline felt the blood drain from her face.
Daniel had never been the kind of child who started fights.
“I'll come right away.”
Vincent offered to drive her.
When they arrived, Daniel was sitting outside the assistant principal's office.
His lip was slightly swollen.
Caroline hurried toward him.
“Daniel!”
He looked ashamed.
“I'm sorry.”
She knelt in front of him.
“Are you hurt?”
“Not badly.”
“What happened?”
Daniel stared at the floor.
“He said you only got your job because you're sleeping with Vincent.”
Caroline froze.
“He said we were beggars living in a rich man's house.”
Vincent stood motionless behind her.
Daniel's voice broke.
“He said everybody knows you stole money.”
Caroline felt tears burning her eyes.
“And what did you do?”
“I told him to stop.”
“Then?”
“He kept saying it.”
Daniel swallowed.
“I pushed him. He pushed me back. Then we fought.”
Caroline took his hands.
“Daniel, I know you were hurt. But fighting won't protect me.”
He looked at her.
“I couldn't just stand there.”
“You can defend the truth without hurting someone.”
He began crying.
“I don't want people talking about you like that.”
Caroline hugged him tightly.
For years, she had been the one protecting Daniel.
Now he was trying to protect her.
And the realization nearly broke her heart.
The school handled the incident according to its disciplinary procedures and promised to address the harassment.
On the drive home, Daniel remained quiet.
Vincent eventually spoke.
“Daniel, can I tell you something?”
“Yes.”
“When I was younger, I thought being strong meant winning every argument.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What changed?”
“I learned that sometimes the strongest thing you can do is refuse to become cruel just because someone else is.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
Caroline looked at Vincent with gratitude.
That evening, she sat with both children and explained what she could about the investigation.
She did not tell them everything.
But she refused to lie.
“Some people at the company may have done something wrong,” she said. “I noticed a problem, and now we're trying to find out what happened.”
Blessing looked worried.
“Will you lose your job?”
“I don't know.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Will we have to leave?”
Caroline took both their hands.
“Whatever happens, we will face it together.”
Mama Grace stood nearby, listening quietly.
After the children went to bed, Vincent received another call from Evelyn Hart.
Her voice was cold.
“The board is meeting tomorrow morning.”
“For what purpose?”
“To vote on your leadership.”
Vincent closed his eyes.
May you like
Then Evelyn delivered the final blow.
“And Vincent, Sebastian has already secured enough support to replace you.”
