Chapter 14 - THE WAREHOUSE OF SECRETSElena's photograph changed the direction of the investigation.

The handwritten ledger contained entries that appeared to correspond with payments from Brooks Development to Horizon Industrial Supply.
Several initials matched people connected to the company.
But the most troubling entry was the note concerning Vincent.
The investigators could not assume that the handwriting was authentic or that the initials meant what Elena believed.
They needed the original ledger.
They also needed corroborating records.
Elena explained that Adrian kept certain documents in a storage facility outside the city.
The facility was rented under a business name that did not appear in the company's official records.
Priya passed the information to the authorities.
The investigators began working to obtain the necessary records and legal authorization.
Meanwhile, Vincent was facing increasing pressure.
Several investors had demanded answers.
Two major clients suspended contract negotiations.
The Riverside project remained closed.
And repairs to the senior housing development were expected to be expensive.
Vincent sat at his desk reviewing the latest financial report.
His assistant knocked.
"Mr. Brooks?"
"Yes?"
"Your mother is here."
Vincent looked up.
"Mama?"
Mama Grace entered carrying a small paper bag.
"Good afternoon."
Vincent smiled weakly.
"What are you doing here?"
"Bringing you lunch."
He laughed.
"I could have ordered something."
"I know."
She placed the bag on his desk.
"That's why I came."
Vincent opened it.
Inside was a homemade chicken sandwich and a container of fruit.
He looked at her.
"You didn't have to do this."
Mama Grace sat down.
"Vincent, when you were seven, you fell off your bicycle and broke your arm."
He smiled.
"I remember."
"You were angry because your friends could still ride."
"What does that have to do with lunch?"
Mama Grace ignored the question.
"Your father told you something that day."
Vincent looked thoughtful.
"He said falling wasn't the end of learning to ride."
Mama Grace nodded.
"And what else?"
Vincent smiled faintly.
"He said I needed to understand why I fell before getting back on."
Mama Grace reached across the desk.
"You're facing something difficult now. But don't confuse losing control of a situation with losing your purpose."
Vincent looked down.
"I feel like I've failed him."
Mama Grace shook her head.
"Your father wasn't a perfect man."
Vincent looked surprised.
"He made mistakes. Some cost him money. Some hurt people he cared about."
She smiled gently.
"But he learned to admit them."
Vincent remained silent.
Mama Grace continued.
"He would be disappointed by what happened in the company."
Vincent lowered his eyes.
"But he'd be proud that you stopped unsafe work instead of hiding the problem."
Vincent swallowed.
"Thank you, Mama."
She stood.
"Now eat your lunch."
After she left, Vincent stared at the sandwich for several moments.
Then he smiled.
Some things never changed.
No matter how wealthy he became, Mama Grace would always be his mother.
And sometimes, that was exactly what he needed.
That afternoon, Caroline received her first independent training assignment.
Marcus asked her to design a checklist for verifying new suppliers.
She spent several hours researching procurement controls.
She consulted the company's legal and compliance teams.
Then she prepared a proposal requiring independent registration checks, verified contact information, banking confirmation, and a review of supplier ownership where appropriate.
Marcus examined the checklist.
"This is thorough."
Caroline smiled.
"Thank you."
"There's one more thing I want you to consider."
"What?"
"How do we make it practical for employees who are already busy?"
Caroline thought about that.
Then she nodded.
"Because a complicated process that nobody follows won't protect anyone."
"Exactly."
She returned to her desk and simplified the checklist.
By the end of the day, Marcus approved it for a small trial.
Caroline felt proud.
Not because she had uncovered a scandal.
But because she was helping prevent future mistakes.
That evening, Vincent came home looking serious.
The authorities had obtained access to the storage facility Elena described.
Investigators found boxes of financial documents, supplier invoices, and electronic storage devices.
They also located material specifications that appeared inconsistent with what had been supplied to certain projects.
The records would require detailed examination.
But the investigation was no longer based only on suspicious transactions.
It now had a physical archive of potentially relevant evidence.
Caroline listened.
"Does this mean they can finally prove what happened?"
Vincent shook his head.
"Not yet. But it gives them more to examine."
Daniel looked up from his homework.
"Did they find the original engineering reports?"
"Some reports, yes."
Daniel frowned.
"Why would anyone keep false records?"
Vincent considered the question.
"Sometimes people believe they can benefit by hiding the truth."
Daniel shook his head.
"But the truth doesn't stay hidden forever."
Caroline smiled.
"That's what we're hoping."
The following morning, the situation took a frightening turn.
The police received a report of smoke coming from the storage facility.
Firefighters arrived and discovered a fire in a section of the building.
The flames were contained before they spread through the entire structure.
Fortunately, no one was injured.
But several storage units suffered damage.
Vincent received the news while driving to the office.
He immediately called Priya.
"Was the evidence destroyed?"
"Most of the materials we identified were already secured. Investigators are assessing the damage."
"Do they know what caused the fire?"
"Not yet."
Vincent looked toward Caroline, who was seated beside him.
Her face was pale.
"Was anyone inside?"
"No one was reported injured."
Caroline exhaled.
Then Priya continued.
"There's something you need to know."
Vincent tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
"What?"
"A security camera captured a person entering the storage corridor shortly before the smoke appeared."
"Can they identify the person?"
"They're reviewing the footage."
A pause followed.

Then Priya spoke again.
"The person used an access code assigned to Adrian Cross."
