Chapter 9: The Settlement Table

Two weeks after the service in the lobby, the atmosphere in Marcus Vance’s conference office was markedly different. The air smelled of fresh coffee and legal parchment. Elena sat at the head of the mahogany table, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, her expression calm, collected, and entirely unreadable. Beside her sat her mother and Marcus. Across the table sat David’s newly appointed defense attorney—a tired-looking man who clearly realized he was defending an unwinnable case—and David himself.

David looked ten years older. His hair was completely uncombed, dark circles shadowed his bloodshot eyes, and his shoulders slumped under the weight of utter defeat. He kept his gaze fixed on the polished wood of the table, unable and unwilling to meet his wife’s eyes.

"We’ve reviewed the final settlement proposal drafted by Mrs. Mercer’s legal team," David’s attorney began, clearing his throat nervously. "Given the overwhelming documentation regarding the equitable lien on the apartment, the corporate asset diversion, and the clear grounds for marital fault, my client is prepared to stipulate to all terms without contest."

Marcus nodded slowly, sliding a thick packet of notarized documents toward David’s side of the table. "Let’s review the specifics for the record. First, the apartment currently held under Sarah Miller’s LLC, which was partially funded by marital assets and renovated entirely by Mrs. Mercer, will be immediately signed over in full to Elena Mercer as sole owner, free and clear of all encumbrances."

David winced visibly at the words, knowing that Sarah was going to explode when she discovered her corporate investment had just been legally handed over to the wife she had helped deceive.

"Second," Marcus continued smoothly, "all joint savings accounts, investment portfolios, and retirement funds will be awarded ninety percent to Mrs. Mercer, with the remaining ten percent allocated to cover outstanding debts accrued exclusively by Mr. Mercer. Third, Mr. Mercer agrees to relinquish all claims to marital property, vehicles, and personal holdings currently in Mrs. Mercer’s possession."

"He agrees," David’s attorney whispered quietly, nudging David with his elbow. "Sign the papers, David. It’s the only way to avoid criminal referral for the financial irregularities."

David picked up the pen with shaking fingers. He looked across the table at Elena, hoping against hope for a flicker of the warmth, forgiveness, or love she had shown him for over a decade. He found only ice. With a heavy, trembling sigh, he signed his name on the dotted line for the final time. The legal execution of their marriage was complete.

"The paperwork is filed and registered," Marcus announced, closing his leather folder with a satisfying snap. "Mr. Mercer, you have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises of the apartment. Mrs. Mercer’s movers will arrive on Thursday morning. Do not attempt to contact my client ever again."
