Chapter 1

The autumn air over the Oakridge porch smelled sharply of damp earth and old cedar. Clara Vance stood rigid, clutching the heavy, sun-faded yellow file folder against her chest like a shield. Her light grey long-sleeve shirt was slightly damp at the cuffs, and her blue trousers strained as she squared her shoulders against the woman standing before her. Helena Vance, her older sister by a decade, stared back with hard, unblinking eyes, her green blouse vivid against the peeling white paint of the porch railing.
"You told me I wasn't welcome in my own house!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with decades of suppressed fury.
Helena didn't flinch. Instead, her hand moved with terrifying speed, the sharp crack of skin against skin echoing off the siding. Clara’s head snapped to the side, the stinging heat blooming across her cheek. She stumbled back a step, catching herself against the rough wooden pillar.
Across the porch, David Vance—their younger brother, trapped in the middle as he had been their entire lives—watched through his dark blue polo shirt, his hands stuffed deep into his beige trousers, paralyzed by the violence. Beside him, sitting quietly on the bottom step in a dark purple dress, Martha Vance, David’s estranged wife, didn't even look up from her lap. She simply adjusted the hem of her dress with maddening calm.
Clara touched her stinging cheek, her fingers coming away cold. The yellow folder slipped slightly, revealing the corner of a deed bearing a red county seal.
"I paid for it and I sold it!" Clara shouted, her voice dropping an octave into a dangerous, ragged whisper that cut through the silence of the quiet suburban street.
Helena sneered, stepping closer, invading Clara's personal space with calculated menace. "You sold a ghost, Clara. And the man waiting inside just woke up."

Before Clara could demand an explanation, the front door behind Helena clicked open, and a stranger stepped onto the porch.
