Chapter 2 - The Scent of Burning Lies

The golden flames leaped greedily toward the evening sky, devouring the heavy legal papers with a terrifying, rhythmic crackle. Clara stared through the glass sliding door, her breath catching in her throat as the thick white pages curled, blackened, and vanished into ash. Those documents represented twenty years of hidden transactions, forged signatures, and the absolute legal foundation of the family corporation. Without them, Margaret’s empire was legally vaporized, leaving a trail of ownership so fragmented that creditors and federal investigators would circle like vultures by morning. Yet, Elena stood motionless by the fire pit, her light blue dress fluttering gently in the breeze, watching the destruction with an eerie, hollow expression.

Margaret stumbled backward, her knees buckling slightly until she caught herself against the edge of the mahogany dining table. The color had completely drained from her wrinkled face, leaving her looking fragile and remarkably ancient under the warm ambient lighting. Her chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid spasms as she pointed a trembling, arthritic finger toward the patio.

"She burned it," Margaret whispered, the sound barely audible over the crackling fire outside. "She just burned the entire contingency plan. Everything we built... everything your grandfather died to protect... gone in five seconds."

Clara did not move to comfort her grandmother. Instead, she adjusted the strap of her white sleeveless halter dress, her dark brown wavy hair falling over one shoulder as she processed the catastrophic shift in power. Elena had not just destroyed evidence; she had declared an open war. But why? Elena had always been the compliant, quiet cousin, the one kept on the sidelines while Clara and Margaret played high-stakes corporate chess. What secret did Elena uncover in that pink leather handbag that made her willing to detonate her own future?

Before Clara could formulate a theory, the heavy oak front door of the mansion swung open with a resounding thud that rattled the vintage chandelier overhead. Heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the grand marble foyer, accompanied by the distinct sound of jangling car keys and ragged breathing.

A tall man stepped into the living room, his tailored suit jacket unbuttoned and his face pale with panic. It was Julian, the family’s chief legal counsel and Margaret’s most fiercely loyal fixer. Julian took one look at Margaret’s tear-streaked face, then turned his gaze toward the patio where Elena stood warming her hands over the dying embers of the fire pit. Julian’s eyes bulged in pure terror as he realized what had just transpired.

"Tell me she didn't," Julian breathed, his voice cracking. "Tell me the asset protection trust deeds weren't in that bag."

Margaret slowly raised her head, looking at Julian with eyes completely devoid of hope. "They are ashes, Julian. And the police are already at the front gate."
