Chapter 13

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung shut behind Victor Vance, leaving behind an aura of stunned silence. The digital clock on the wall read 9:15 AM. The emergency board meeting had transformed from a hostile corporate coup into an extraordinary reclamation of family legacy.
Mrs. Kensington stood up slowly, smoothing down her tailored skirt, and walked over to Arthur. She extended a wrinkled, elegant hand, which Arthur took and shook respectfully.
“We owe you an apology, Arthur,” she said softly, her eyes holding genuine warmth. “We allowed ourselves to be blinded by projections and promises of rapid growth. We didn't see what Victor was truly building beneath the surface.”
“The past few days have tested all of us, Mrs. Kensington,” Arthur replied graciously. “But Blackwood Enterprises has weathered worse storms than my cousin’s ambition. With your continued support, we’ll rebuild the estate and modernize the firm without losing our foundation.”
The remaining board members offered collective nods of agreement, murmuring their approval as they packed up their portfolios and filed quietly out of the boardroom, leaving Arthur and Clara alone in the sunlit penthouse space.
As the elevator doors chimed their departure down the hall, the intense, rigid posture that Arthur had maintained throughout the crisis finally softened. He let out a long, ragged breath, resting his hands against the edge of the conference table and closing his eyes for a moment.
“It’s over,” Clara said quietly, walking forward from the doorway. She unzipped the tote bag slightly, allowing Penny to poke her little brown head out and sniff the crisp Manhattan air.
