Back at the loft, Clara’s professional life was beginning to take root in ways she hadn't dared to hope. Through Maya’s network in the local arts community, Clara had landed her first major freelance branding project—designing the visual identity for an independent community bookstore opening on the east side of the city. It didn't come with the prestige or the exorbitant paycheck of a corporate conglomerate, but it offered something far more valuable: complete creative autonomy and the deep, soul-satisfying joy of building something from her own authentic vision.

She sat at her desk late into the evening, the soft glow of her computer screen illuminating colorful mood boards featuring warm typography, botanical illustrations, and earthy color palettes. Lily was fast asleep in her crib just a few feet away, her breathing deep and rhythmic. The ambient noise of the city hummed softly through the glass, a comforting reminder of the vibrant, living world outside.

Her phone buzzed quietly on the desk. She glanced over, expecting an email from Sarah Chen regarding the next steps of the custody agreement. Instead, it was a text message from David.

“Just finished my weekly counseling session. We talked about breaking generational enmeshment. It’s hard work, but for the first time, it feels like I’m actually building a real foundation. Hope you and Lily had a peaceful day.”
