Chapter 10: Desperate Measures

Desperation is a corrosive emotion, and for Marcus Vance, it had finally reached a boiling point. Weeks of living in the squalor of the industrial district motel, eating cheap diner food, and facing closed doors had burned away whatever lingering vanity he possessed. His money was completely gone, his designer clothes were wrinkled beyond repair, and his temporary job applications at local construction firms had all been rejected due to his lack of verifiable references and his unprofessional demeanor.

Late one evening, sitting in the harsh fluorescent light of the motel room while Elena slept fitfully on the bed, Marcus made a reckless decision. He remembered an old secondary safe deposit box key that had belonged to a shared corporate account before Clara initiated the asset freeze. If he could access the physical safe located in a downtown bank branch before the legal freeze fully propagated to physical safety deposit boxes, he might be able to salvage enough bearer bonds or cash to skip the state entirely.

The next morning, Marcus dressed in his best remaining suit—a slightly faded charcoal-gray number that smelled of stale tobacco—and caught a bus downtown. His heart hammered against his ribs as he walked into the imposing marble lobby of the Pacific Trust Bank, the very institution where the Carrara estate maintained its primary holdings.

He approached the customer service desk, flashing his identification card with an air of practiced confidence. "I need to access safe deposit box 412, registered under Vance-Carrara Holdings."

The bank officer, a sharp-eyed woman with silver-rimmed glasses, typed rapidly into her terminal. Her fingers paused, and her expression instantly shifted from polite professionalism to guarded caution. She pressed a silent desk button under the counter.

"Mr. Vance, I show that all associated corporate and personal access rights for box 412 were revoked thirty days ago by primary trust holder Clara Carrara," the officer stated, her voice even and calm. "You no longer have authorization to access this facility."

"There's been a mistake," Marcus insisted, leaning over the counter and raising his voice slightly, drawing the attention of nearby guards. "I am a principal signatory on that account. I demand to speak with the branch manager immediately."

Within seconds, two burly security guards materialized on either side of Marcus, their hands resting comfortably near their belts. The branch manager stepped out from a glass-walled office, holding a printed notification sheet.

"Mr. Vance, you are currently trespassing on private financial property," the manager said coldly. "Furthermore, the legal department of the Carrara estate has filed an injunction regarding any attempted access to subsidiary holdings. Step away from the counter immediately, or we will have you removed by the police."

Realizing he was completely trapped, Marcus felt a surge of blind rage. He opened his mouth to shout, but the cold, unyielding stares of the security guards reminded him of Clara’s expression on the morning she locked him out. He turned sharply on his heel, shoving his hands into his pockets, and stormed out of the bank into the blinding downtown sunlight, utterly defeated once again.
