Chapter 13: Unraveling the Network

The kitchen table was covered not with fraudulent blueprints and corporate deeds, but with steaming cups of coffee and crisp legal files bearing the official seal of the county district attorney's office. Assistant District Attorney Rachel Vance leaned over the solid-state drive bay that Clara had successfully extracted from the basement utility cabinet the night before.

“This little metal box is the smoking gun that’s going to bring down the entire Horizon shell operation,” Rachel said, tapping the drive bay with the eraser end of a wooden pencil. “Our cyber-forensics team spent the last four hours pulling the metadata. Horizon wasn't just targeting your house, Mrs. Vance. Rachel looked up from the files, her expression admiring. “Well, their algorithm didn't account for a retired literature teacher who knows how to spot a fraudulent narrative when she sees one. By pulling this drive and preserving the blockchain mismatch, you essentially tripped the circuit breaker on a fifty-million-dollar corporate real estate scam.”

“What happens to Evelyn and Arthur?” Clara asked, keeping her voice steady.

“They’re facing multiple federal counts of wire fraud, identity theft, and malicious tampering with municipal infrastructure,” Rachel replied firmly, closing her leather briefcase with a crisp snap. “They aren't making bail anytime soon. And as for Horizon Residential Solutions, our office is issuing a statewide injunction freezing all of their automated property trusts pending a grand jury audit.”
