Chapter 5: The Clubhouse Meeting

The Oakridge Estates community clubhouse sat at the dead center of the neighborhood, a gleaming brick structure featuring a heated outdoor pool, a pristine tennis court, and a large multi-purpose room used mostly for homeowners association meetings and holiday parties. At ten o'clock at night, the building was completely dark, save for a single sliver of light glowing beneath the double wooden doors of the main office.

Clara and Maya sat parked across the street in Maya’s sedan, the engine idling quietly as they watched the entrance through the rain-spotted windshield. Ten minutes earlier, after refusing to let their husbands brush off their questions, the two women had watched Robert and David leave the house again, claiming an emergency board meeting had been called.

"They're not holding a board meeting," Maya said quietly, her hands resting lightly on the steering wheel. "Look who else is pulling into the parking lot."

A sleek black SUV rolled silently into the gravel lot, its headlights extinguished before it came to a complete stop beside the clubhouse side door. A man in a dark tailored suit stepped out, carrying a heavy metal briefcase. He didn't look like a local resident; he moved with the practiced, utilitarian efficiency of a corporate liquidator or a high-priced attorney.

Clara opened the passenger door without a word. "Come on."

"Clara, wait," Maya hissed, grabbing her arm. "If we go in there, there's no turning back. We're crossing a line we can't uncross."

Clara turned her head, looking at Maya with an expression of profound, quiet resolve. "We crossed that line the moment we picked up the chainsaw, Maya. There is no going back to sleep."

Moving quickly and silently across the empty street, the two women slipped through the side gate of the clubhouse courtyard. The heavy glass door leading to the rear terrace was unlocked—a careless oversight by men who believed their sanctuary was entirely secure. Slipping inside, they navigated the darkened hallway, guided only by the muffled sound of voices coming from the main conference room just ahead.

"...the buyers are inspecting the remaining easement parcels on Thursday," a cold, unfamiliar voice was saying inside the room. "If the foundation issues on Lot fourteen and Lot sixteen become public record, the entire title transfer collapses. We lose everything."

"My wife is already asking questions," Robert’s voice replied, sounding strained and anxious. "She found the original grading permits this afternoon. I don't know how much she understands, but she's not letting it go."

"Then you handle it," the unfamiliar voice snapped. "That's what you were paid for when we developed this subdivision. You signed the indemnity clauses, Robert. If this leaks, you go down for municipal fraud first."

Maya felt a cold chill wash over her spine as she pressed her back against the corridor wall. Clara’s face remained impassive, her eyes burning with a terrifying, crystal-clear focus.
