Chapter 8: The Stories of Yesterday

Arthur shifted his chair forward until his knees pressed against the mattress, and Lily scrambled up onto the edge of the bed entirely, curling her legs beneath her floral dress. Sarah reached out, her arms surprisingly strong as she pulled them both into a loose, encompassing embrace, drawing them down toward her pillow.

"Tell me about the time we got lost in the pumpkin patch," Lily requested, her voice small and comforting, slipping into a familiar bedtime routine they had shared a hundred times before.

A faint chuckle escaped Sarah’s lips, a sound like dry autumn leaves rustling in the wind. "Oh, that was a disaster," Sarah recalled, her voice gaining a temporary, illusory strength. "Your dad swore he knew the way out, but we ended up walking in a complete circle for two hours. And Arthur kept insisting that the giant inflatable scarecrow was waving us in the right direction."

"I was maintaining morale," Arthur protested gently, a weak, nostalgic smile touching his lips for the first time in days. "As the expedition leader, it was my professional obligation to project absolute confidence, even if I was completely and utterly lost."

"You bought three caramel apples just to bribe me into staying quiet," Lily added, a tiny ghost of a smile playing on her own lips as she remembered the crisp afternoon from two autumns ago.

"And you ate every single one of them and then fell asleep in the car on the way home, covered in sticky sugar from head to toe," Sarah whispered, closing her eyes as she breathed in the scent of Lily’s hair.

They weren't a patient, a grieving father, and a terrified child; they were just a family, sitting together in the fading afternoon light, recounting the small, mundane adventures that made up the architecture of their life together.

The purple candle on the miniature cake flickered violently as the air conditioning system kicked on with a low hum. The flame shrank down to a tiny blue point before springing back up, casting long, wavering shadows across the ceiling. Lily watched it anxiously, her hand reaching out to hover protectively over the flame as if she could physically shield it from the draft.
