Chapter 13: The Legal Summons

The men on the porch didn't smile. One of them, holding a leather folder bearing the seal of the county court, looked past Elena into the brightly lit foyer.
“Are you Elena Vance?” the officer asked formally.
“I am,” Elena replied, her voice steady and clear.
“We have an emergency asset freezing order and foreclosure notice issued on behalf of the state commercial banking syndicate regarding the property deed and associated trust holdings,” the officer stated, extending the paperwork toward her.
From behind Elena, Mark hurried into the hallway, his face stark white, his white shirt collar stained with sweat. “Wait—there’s been a mistake! This property is protected under a family trust allocation. You can’t just—show me the judge’s signature!”
The officer glanced at Mark with disinterest, handing the paperwork directly to Elena instead. “The judge signed the freeze at 4:00 PM today, Mr. Vance. All associated assets, holding accounts, and collateral properties linked to Eleanor Vance’s estate are under immediate judicial review for corporate fraud.”
Elena accepted the legal documents, scanning the header with calm precision. The freeze covered every account Mark and Eleanor had relied on to maintain their illusion of untouchable wealth.
“Thank you,” Elena said to the officer. “Please ensure copies are also served directly to Eleanor Vance at her primary residence.”
“Already on our way there, ma’am,” the officer replied, turning and heading back down the driveway toward their unmarked cruiser.
Mark stared at the open doorway, his knees visibly shaking. He grabbed the doorframe for support, looking at Elena as if she were a ghost. “It’s all gone,” he whispered, the words sounding hollow and broken. “The cars, the investments, the house... Mom’s entire legacy.”

“It was never a legacy, Mark,” Elena said, closing the door firmly against the cold night air and sliding the brass bolt home with a satisfying metallic click. “It was a house of cards built on debt and intimidation. And it’s finally fallen down.”
Mark slumped against the wall in the hallway, sliding down until he sat on the hardwood floor, burying his face in his hands as quiet, helpless sobs racked his frame. Elena didn’t offer him comfort, but she didn’t mock him either. She simply stepped around him, walked upstairs to the nursery, and checked on Clara, who was sleeping peacefully in her crib, bathed in the soft glow of the star-shaped nightlight.
