Chapter 7

Sarah waited for Vance to finish his rhetorical flourish before speaking. The courtroom was silent, every eye fixed on the witness stand. Vance turned back toward the defense table, clearly preparing to move for an immediate dismissal of the evidence based on procedural violations.

"Your Honor," Sarah said clearly, her voice cutting through the stillness before Vance could utter another word. "Before the defense moves to suppress the documents, I request permission to enter an additional item into the record—an unalterable digital verification file."

Vance stopped in his tracks, turning sharply back toward the witness stand. His eyes narrowed. "Your Honor, this is completely out of order. The discovery phase concluded weeks ago. The defense objects to trial-by-ambush tactics."

"Mr. Vance," Judge Sterling said, leaning forward over the bench. "What is the nature of the file?"

"It is a cryptographic verification log originating from the primary naval communications hub in Norfolk," Sarah answered steadily, pulling the small metal flash drive from her pocket and placing it on the small shelf of the witness stand. "It contains the electronic signature of the commanding officer who issued the stand-down order on the night the USS Orion was lost, encrypted using the exact same cipher text currently under review by this court."

The color drained slightly from Vance’s face. He knew—instantly—that if that drive was plugged into the court’s secure terminal, the digital footprint would trace directly back to the secure servers his corporate clients had spent months scrubbing.

"Your Honor," Vance said, his voice rising with uncharacteristic urgency. "This is an unverified digital medium obtained outside the formal chain of custody. It could be corrupted, manipulated, or entirely fabricated by disgruntled former personnel. We move for an immediate rejection and a contempt citation for the witness."

Judge Sterling looked down at the flash drive, then at Vance’s panicked expression, and finally at Sarah’s calm, resolute face. The judge understood that accepting the drive meant opening a Pandora's box that the Department of Defense would spend years trying to close. But a federal courtroom was still a court of law.

"The court will take a fifteen-minute recess," Judge Sterling announced, striking his gavel once with a sharp, echoing crack. "The court’s technical expert will examine the drive in my chambers, in the presence of both counsel, to verify its cryptographic integrity. Court is adjourned until then."

As the bailiff called for order, Vance glared at Sarah with undisguised fury. The polished veneer was completely gone. Sarah stood up from the witness stand, her posture straight, her breathing steady. The battle had moved from the theater of words into the unyielding domain of truth.
