Chapter 1 - The Still Horizon

The morning sun filtered through the canopy in fragmented bands of amber, striking the paved pathway with an unyielding warmth. Lily gripped her twin sister’s hand tightly, feeling the nervous flutter in Clara’s pulse. Between them on the cold flagstones lay Julian Vance, their father, unmoving. His dark hair spilled against the stone, tailored suit dusted with morning grit, chest barely lifting with shallow, fragile breaths.

Clara knelt beside the small pink backpack dumped carelessly near his shoulder. Her trembling fingers parted the fabric, searching through crayons, drawing pads, and trinkets until she touched plastic. She pulled out the small toy phone, pressing the unresponsive plastic keys against her palm. A single tear tracked down Lily’s cheek, glistening under the canopy. Clara looked into her sister's terrified eyes and whispered the words that broke the silence. "What do we do?"

Lily knelt beside her sister, reaching toward Julian’s jacket. Beneath the heavy fabric of his lapel, hidden away from public view, rested an authentic leather wallet. As Lily tried to pull it out, a folded note dropped free. Scrawled across the paper in sharp ink were five digits and an address: Warehouse 4, East River Docks. Bring the key, or the girls never wake up.

Lily gasped, the slip of paper slipping between her small fingers. She glanced at Julian's pale face. He hadn't collapsed from an illness. A low rustle echoed from the shrubs bordering the promenade. Looking up, Clara froze as two tall figures dressed in dark utility jackets stepped onto the cobblestones, eyes locked onto the children.
