Chapter 10: The Faculty Meeting

The afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the polished oak desk of Principal Henderson’s office. Maya sat in a stiff-backed wooden chair opposite the principal, her hands folded neatly in her lap. Across the room, leaning awkwardly against the door frame, stood Tyler, summoned by the administration following a formal report filed not by Maya, but by an anonymous custodian who had witnessed Tyler tampering with the broadcasting vault’s lock earlier in the week. Principal Henderson looked tired, rubbing his temples as he reviewed a printed log of security camera footage and digital access records.

"This is a serious infraction, Tyler," Principal Henderson said, his voice measured and grave. "Tampering with emergency access doors and unauthorized use of school media infrastructure violates multiple student code-of-conduct policies. We don't tolerate targeted harassment on this campus." Tyler shifted his weight uncomfortably, staring down at the floorboards. The arrogant swagger that defined his public persona had completely vanished, replaced by the sullen, defensive posture of a teenager caught red-handed. He cast a resentful sideways glance at Maya, clearly blaming her for the administrative fallout, though she had nothing to do with the custodian's report.

Principal Henderson turned his attention toward Maya, his expression softening into genuine concern. "Maya, the custodian mentioned you were locked in that room for nearly twenty minutes before the auxiliary power was shut down. Are you alright? Do you want to press formal disciplinary charges or request a mandatory separation order?" The question hung heavy in the room. Maya looked at Tyler, seeing not a terrifying monster, but a deeply insecure boy whose poor choices were finally catching up with him in a permanent way. She knew that a formal suspension or disciplinary record would completely derail his athletic scholarship prospects.

Maya took a slow breath, considering her response carefully. She had no desire for petty vengeance; she only wanted peace and the freedom to exist without harassment. "Principal Henderson, I don't want a formal suspension or a ruined record for him," Maya said clearly, her voice steady and deliberate. Tyler’s head snapped up in genuine shock, his eyes wide with disbelief. "I just want it understood that this behavior stops permanently. If he leaves me alone, I'm willing to let the administration handle it internally with counseling or detention." Principal Henderson nodded slowly, impressed by her maturity and restraint.
