Chapter 5

The auditorium at the National Press Club was packed to capacity, cameras clicking rhythmically like a swarm of mechanical insects. Journalists from every major network shoved microphones toward the podium, shouting questions over the low murmur of anticipation. When Clara Vance walked onto the stage, flanked by her brother Marcus and a team of federal whistleblower attorneys, a hush fell over the room. She wore a simple charcoal blazer, a stark contrast to the blue shirt she had worn the night of the raid, but her posture was identical: unyielding, calm, and resolute.

Clara adjusted the microphone, the metallic scratch echoing softly through the cavernous hall before she began to speak.

"For over forty years, the Sterling family has used the sacred trust of military service as a shield for corporate greed," Clara began, her voice steady and clear, projecting to the back row. "Under the guise of patriotism, billions of dollars intended for soldier safety and modern equipment were funneled into offshore accounts and political bribes. My late husband, David Sterling, discovered this operation. When he threatened to expose the truth, he was silenced."

A collective gasp rippled through the press corps. Cameras flashed blindingly, capturing every micro-expression on Clara's face as she laid out the devastating facts. She didn't rely on emotional appeals; she presented cold, verifiable data, holding up copies of the physical ledgers recovered from the estate's safe room.

"Today, we are releasing the complete unredacted financial records to the public record," Clara continued, locking eyes with the camera lenses broadcasting her words live across the nation. "These documents implicate not only the leadership of Sterling Defense Logistics but also dozens of elected officials who traded the lives of American service members for campaign contributions. The era of untouchable dynasties in our defense sector is over."

As she stepped away from the podium, chaos erupted. Shouted questions ricocheted off the walls, but Clara did not look back. She walked steadily down the side aisle, her brother guiding her through the throng of reporters toward a waiting secure vehicle.

Back at the safe house, the television broadcast showed immediate political fallout. The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee announced his immediate resignation, citing health reasons, while the Department of Justice officially expanded its investigation to include every lawmaker named in the ledgers. Beatrice Sterling's empire was officially collapsing in real time, dismantled not by guns or political maneuvering, but by the relentless pursuit of truth from a woman they had underestimated for a decade.
