Chapter 8: Confrontation at the Precinct

The interview room was smaller and colder than Clara remembered from television dramas. Julian sat at the metal table, his orange jumpsuit rumpled, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes. When the heavy steel door creoked open and Clara walked in, unescorted by police, Julian looked up with a mixture of desperate hope and profound dread. He straightened his shoulders instinctively, trying to summon some remnant of his former authority.

“Clara,” Julian breathed, his voice cracking slightly. “Thank God. You came. I knew you wouldn't abandon me. We’re partners, remember? For better or for worse—”

“Save your breath, Julian,” Clara interrupted, cutting him off mid-sentence. She did not sit down. Instead, she walked slowly around the perimeter of the small room, her heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor like a ticking clock. “Let’s skip the vows. Let’s skip the lies about mental breakdowns and corporate pressure. Let’s talk about the estate. Let’s talk about the trust fund.”

Julian’s face went rigid. The desperate hope vanished from his eyes, replaced by a dark, guarded panic. “What are you talking about?”

Clara pulled the photograph of the woman in the locket from her pocket and dropped it flat onto the center of the metal table. It slid across the scratched surface and stopped right in front of Julian’s cuffed hands. Julian stared down at the image, and for the first time, Clara saw genuine, unmitigated terror in his eyes.

“Who is she, Julian?” Clara demanded, leaning down over the table so her face was inches from his. “And why does she look like me? Why was her locket hidden inside the wall where you kept an innocent child locked away like an animal?”

Julian swallowed hard, his breath hitching. He looked away from the photograph, refusing to meet her gaze. “You don’t want to know, Clara. Some doors are best left closed. I built a wall to protect you from it.”

“You didn't build a wall to protect me; you built a prison to keep me compliant!” Clara’s voice rose, vibrating with a controlled fury that made Julian flinch. “You stole my history, you manipulated my life, and you brought innocent children into our home to feed whatever sick compulsions or criminal enterprises you’re tied up in. I want the truth, Julian. Now. Or I swear to God, I will spend every last dime of the Vance fortune making sure you rot in the deepest, darkest hole they have.”

Julian trembled, the last of his defenses finally crumbling under the weight of her unrelenting gaze. He opened his mouth, and the dark, ugly truth began to spill out into the sterile room.
