Chapter 5: Digital Footprints

Officer Marcus paused, his pen hovering over the notepad. He looked up from the page, his gaze shifting from Julian’s steady, unyielding stare to the sudden stillness that had fallen over Eleanor and Lydia. The polished veneer of corporate invulnerability was beginning to show deep structural fissures.

“Is that correct, Ms. Moretti?” Officer Marcus asked, his voice losing its initial routine detachment and taking on a sharper, more investigative edge. “Does your administrative profile hold the unique identifier that triggered the security latch on the media room door?”

Lydia swallowed hard, her hand instinctively reaching up to touch the diamond pendant resting against her collarbone. For all her rehearsed poise, the sudden reality of a police investigation caught her unprepared. She had expected Julian to rage, to swing the baseball bat, to act the part of the unhinged ex-son-in-law so they could have him detained for disturbing the peace. She had not anticipated him methodically securing digital evidence while carrying a terrified child.

“The network architecture is complex,” Lydia stammered slightly, the practiced cadence of her speech faltering. “Profiles are shared among executive staff. Anyone could have used my terminal while I was circulating among the guests in the main gallery. It’s entirely circumstantial.”

“Circumstantial evidence often points directly to the person standing closest to the console,” Officer Marcus replied, stepping away from the door and pulling a small evidence bag from his belt. “Mr. Vance, if you can transfer those telemetry packets to my department terminal, we can issue a formal subpoena for the server hard drives tonight. If those logs confirm a manual lockdown from Ms. Moretti’s profile, we are no longer looking at a civil dispute or a malfunctioning smart-lock. We are looking at unlawful imprisonment of a minor.”

Eleanor stepped forward, her dark coat swirling around her ankles like obsidian water. Her face was a mask of calculated fury, yet her eyes revealed the desperate calculation of a matriarch realizing her empire was vulnerable to the law.

“Officer, let’s not be hasty,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a low, persuasive purr designed to defuse authority through sheer aristocratic force. “The Vance family has supported this precinct’s community outreach programs for decades. A misunderstanding between family members regarding estate management should not burden the judicial system with unnecessary administrative noise. We are willing to drop any counter-claims regarding the disturbance.”

Julian gently shifted Clara, who was now fast asleep, resting her head heavily on his shoulder. He stood up slowly, towering over his mother with a quiet, devastating finality.

“This isn’t a family misunderstanding, Mother,” Julian said quietly. “You thought you could break us, push us out, and sweep Clara’s inheritance under your corporate rug. But you underestimated what a father will do when his child is threatened.”
