Chapter 5

Dawn broke over the suburban neighborhood with a pale, cold light that matched the mood inside the kitchen. Clara packed a small duffel bag with comfortable clothes, toiletries, and a few favorite books, ensuring nothing sharp or potentially hazardous made its way into the luggage. David loaded the trunk of their sedan while Elena sat quietly at the kitchen island, nursing a mug of black coffee she barely tasted. Upstairs, Leo was still fast asleep in his crib, blissfully unaware that his beloved aunt was leaving for a long, uncertain journey of healing. Clara had decided it was better not to wake the toddler for a tearful goodbye that he wouldn't understand and that Elena emotionally couldn't handle. When everything was ready, Clara walked over and placed a reassuring hand on Elena’s shoulder. "It’s time," Clara whispered. The drive north was marked by a heavy, unbroken silence. The highway unrolled before them like a gray ribbon, flanked by towering pines and frosted fields that bore witness to the changing of the seasons. Elena stared out the passenger window, watching the landscape blur as the city gave way to the quiet majesty of the mountains. Every mile put more distance between her and the source of her torment, but also between her and the little boy whose bright striped pajamas were burned into her memory. David drove with steady hands, occasionally glancing in the rearview mirror to check on the road behind them, ensuring they weren't being followed by ghosts of old habits or desperate phone calls to shady dealers. They arrived at Serenity Ridge by mid-morning, the facility nestled quietly among the evergreens, looking more like a mountain lodge than a rehabilitation clinic. The architecture was warm and welcoming, designed to ease the transition into treatment, yet to Elena, the heavy oak doors looked like the gates of a sanctuary she didn't deserve to enter. Clara parked near the main entrance, turning off the engine with a quiet sigh that seemed to release hours of built-up tension. They sat in the car for a moment, gathering their courage for the final, difficult goodbye before the professional staff took over the heavy lifting.
