Chapter 1 - The Broken Gift

The golden afternoon light bathed the manicured hedges of the Vance estate in amber. Across the polished travertine tiles of the veranda, eight-year-old Lily clutched a handcrafted wooden box tied with a satin ribbon. Inside was a hand-painted ceramic nightlight she had sculpted herself over three patient weeks at school. Her hazel eyes shone with childish pride as she skipped toward her uncle Gage, who held court near the marble fountain.

Gage Vance adjusted the lapel of his tailored tuxedo, his smirk dripping with condescension as he glanced down at the box thrust into his hands. His expression soured instantly. He sneered, turning the rustic box with two fingers as if it were contaminated. "What is this cheap garbage?" he scoffed loudly enough to carry across the lawn. Before the child could answer, his wrist flicked dismissively. The box crashed against the flagstones, the delicate ceramic inside shattering into jagged white dust.

Lily gasped, tears welling instantly in her wide eyes. Beside the dessert display, Eleanor, Gage’s mother, picked a frosted grape from a crystal tier, barely glancing up. "Children are far too dramatic," she murmured dismissively.

Arthur Vance stepped out from the French doors, having witnessed every second. He did not yell. He knelt beside his weeping daughter, his thumb gently catching her falling tears. Pulling his smartphone from his breast pocket, Arthur tapped a single red button on the family office app: recurring monthly allowance cancelled. Standing tall, Arthur locked eyes with his younger brother. "From now on, you survive without my money."

Arthur took Lily’s hand and turned his back. Behind them, Gage’s confident smirk melted into sheer terror as his screen pinged with a notification from the bank.
