Chapter 6: Fractured Loyalties

Dawn crept slowly through the wire-reinforced glass of the hospital windows, casting pale, watery light across the linoleum floor of the second-floor corridor. Helen Vance sat rigidly in the waiting area near the elevators, her posture immaculate despite having spent the entire night upright in a stiff vinyl chair. She had refused to leave the premises, knowing that doing so would be interpreted by Caleb as an admission of guilt. A leather briefcase rested on the floor beside her feet, containing corporate bylaws, trust documents, and emergency contact numbers for the finest criminal defense attorneys in the state. Yet none of those papers could solve the human equation sitting just a few hundred feet away.

Footsteps approached, heavy and purposeful. Helen did not need to look up to know who it was; she recognized the cadence of her son’s stride anywhere. Caleb stopped directly in front of her chair, his tall shadow falling completely over her. He had washed his face and straightened his tie, but the dark circles under his eyes and the hardened set of his jaw spoke of a night spent nursing pure, unadulterated vengeance. He looked down at his mother not with anger anymore, but with a profound, chilling detachment that felt far more dangerous.

“The police have your statement,” Caleb said quietly, his voice devoid of any familial warmth. “And they have Sarah’s account of what happened in the foyer. Officer Miller is filing the paperwork for an official investigation into reckless endangerment and aggravated assault on a pregnant individual.”

Helen finally raised her chin, meeting his gaze with a steely glint in her own eyes that matched his defiance. Decades of running a multi-billion-dollar enterprise had taught her never to fold when a bluff was called, even if the opponent sitting across the table was her own flesh and blood. “You are throwing away your entire inheritance, your career, and your family name over a girl who has always been entirely unsuited for our world, Caleb. You are blinded by emotion. I went to that house to talk sense into her, not to harm her or my unborn grandchild.”

“Don’t you dare invoke my child,” Caleb interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal edge that caused a nurse walking past to quickly alter her course. “You never wanted this baby. You made that abundantly clear at every family dinner, every board meeting, and every private conversation we’ve had since we announced the pregnancy. You saw Sarah as a threat to your control, and when she wouldn’t back down from renovating the estate’s east wing, you lost your temper.”

“That is a complete fabrication,” Helen retorted, her voice steady, though her hands trembled slightly against her lap. “Accidents happen on marble staircases every single day, Caleb. If the police investigate, they will find no physical evidence linking me to that fall. It’s her word against mine, and in a court of law, we both know how history treats opportunists.”
