Chapter 3

The arrival of federal agents in the middle of a premier philanthropic gala sent a collective shudder through the elite crowd. Whispers erupted like static electricity across the ballroom. Arthur Sterling remained completely unmoving, his gaze fixed on the two men marching purposefully toward him. Leading the detail was Special Agent Marcus Vance, no relation to Thomas, whose reputation for dismantling corporate fraud was legendary throughout the financial district.

“Mr. Sterling,” Agent Vance said, nodding respectfully as he stopped in front of the elderly patriarch. “We appreciate your prompt cooperation tonight. We have a warrant to secure the premises and seize all electronic assets related to Sterling Foundation accounts.”

“You’re right on time, Agent Vance,” Arthur replied evenly, handing the leather folio over to the federal investigator. “You’ll find everything you need right here, detailing the unauthorized transfers orchestrated by my son-in-law, Thomas Vance.”

Elena stepped forward, her face flushed with sudden, desperate fury. “This is a setup! You can’t do this! My father—Thomas—has legal rights to this estate!”

Agent Vance turned his cool, professional gaze toward Elena. “Miss Vance, your father is currently fleeing the property through a service alley, but our perimeter units have already secured all exits. As for you, you’re coming with us for questioning regarding the laundering of stolen corporate funds.”

Clara wailed, throwing herself at Agent Vance’s feet. “Please, leave her out of this! It was my fault! I let her use the accounts!”

Arthur looked down at his longtime housekeeper with profound disappointment. “Clara, you managed this household for twenty years. I trusted you implicitly. How long did you know that Thomas was robbing us blind to buy your daughter designer gowns and sports cars?”

“Since the beginning,” Clara sobbed into the carpet, her shoulders heaving with genuine remorse. “Thomas threatened to fire me and throw us onto the streets if I said a word. He said the old man—meaning you, sir—was losing his grip on reality anyway and wouldn't even notice the missing millions.”

The admission hung in the air like poison. Lily, still sitting quietly with the family doctor, watched the unfolding drama with a maturity far beyond her seven years. She clutched the bruised petals of the pink peony, her heart heavy with the realization that the adults in her world were built of fragile glass and hidden lies.

Arthur felt a sharp pain in his chest, a physical manifestation of betrayal that went deeper than any financial loss. Thomas wasn’t just an employee gone rogue; he was married to Arthur’s late daughter’s memory. Thomas had been welcomed into the inner sanctum of the Sterling family, only to use that trust as a weapon to hollow out the empire from the inside out.

“Secure the east wing immediately,” Agent Vance instructed his subordinate agents into his lapel radio. “And bring me every hard drive from the executive study before anyone has a chance to wipe the servers.”

Elena tried to push past the agents, her glittering sequin gown catching on a brass stanchion, ripping the delicate fabric. She shrieked in frustration, her glamorous facade completely shattering into pathetic desperation.

“You’ll pay for this, old man!” Elena screamed, her voice losing all its aristocratic polish. “When Thomas’s lawyers get hold of your medical records, you won't even have a pot to piss in!”

Arthur didn't flinch. He walked over to Elena, towering over her as she struggled against the gentle but firm grip of the federal agents.

“My mind is as sharp as a razor, Elena,” Arthur whispered fiercely. “And the only place Thomas’s lawyers will be visiting him is behind maximum-security glass.”
