Chapter 5: The Legal Battlefield

In a sleek, glass-walled conference room on the forty-fifth floor of a Midtown skyscraper, the battle lines were officially drawn. The panoramic view of Central Park below offered a stark contrast to the aggressive tension inside the room. Eleanor Vance sat at the head of the polished walnut table, flanked by her lead counsel, a high-priced divorce litigator known as Victor Sterling, whose reputation for ruthlessness preceded him in every courtroom across New York State. Across the table sat Julian, accompanied by his own attorney, a quiet, methodical woman named Evelyn Vance—no relation—who specialized in family welfare and asset protection.
Sterling leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, flashing a practiced, predatory smile. "Mr. Vance, my client is prepared to offer a reasonable settlement to avoid a messy public trial that could severely impact your financial holdings and your standing within the board of directors. A joint custody arrangement, standard asset division, and a mutual agreement to seal all records."
Julian did not even blink. He looked directly at Sterling, then shifted his gaze to Eleanor, who sat with her chin elevated, wearing an emerald-green silk dress that screamed defiance. "There will be no joint custody, Sterling. And there will be no sealed records of the kind that protect abusers," Julian said, his voice measured and utterly devoid of hesitation.
Eleanor finally spoke, her voice laced with ice. "You think you can destroy me, Julian? You think a few emotional children and a staged incident in a ballroom will erase twenty years of building this dynasty? I am the mother of your children. Without me, your social standing will disintegrate into nothing."
"You were never a mother to them, Eleanor. You were a warden," Julian replied coldly, sliding a thick manila folder across the table toward the defense attorney. "Those documents contain sworn affidavits from our domestic staff, educational records detailing Leo’s regression, and psychological evaluations conducted just yesterday. Furthermore, we have security footage from every hallway in our home spanning the last three years."

Sterling quickly opened the folder, his eyes scanning the first few pages. The confident smirk instantly vanished from his face, replaced by a look of sudden, intense professional calculation. He whispered something urgent into Eleanor’s ear, causing her impeccably made-up face to pale significantly.
"We will see you in family court, counselor," Julian said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "And I promise you, every single door you locked against my children will be opened to the judge."
