Chapter 7 - The Hidden Compartment

The strange metallic clanging beneath the floorboards vibrated through the kitchen tiles, causing the empty dog bowl near Toby's pillar to rattle rhythmically. Sergeant Vance instantly drew his service weapon, pointing the barrel downward as he backed away from the kitchen table.

"Everyone stay back!" Vance ordered sharply, scanning the room for any other hidden threats. "Miller, what is under this floor? Is there another room?"

David stared at the shaking floorboards with a look of genuine panic that he couldn't fake. He shook his head frantically, his voice trembling. "I don't know! I swear to God, I didn't know anything was under the kitchen! Mom handled the house plans! She inherited the property from her grandfather!"

Martha stopped struggling against her handcuffs. Her laughter bubbled up again, raspy and triumphant. "My grandfather built this house during the depression," she whispered, her eyes gleaming with fanatical pride. "He built a safe haven for the chosen bloodline. And the safe haven requires a sacrifice to seal the pact whenever outsiders try to break it."

The floorboards in the center of the kitchen suddenly buckled upward with a loud splintering of wood. A heavy iron ring, covered in thick rust, burst through the linoleum as the hidden trapdoor was violently shoved open from below.

Elena pulled Leo and Toby tightly against her chest, shielding their faces as a thick cloud of dust and foul-smelling air billowed out from the newly revealed cavity.

"Officer Vance!" the young female officer shouted, aiming her flashlight down into the dark abyss. "There’s a ladder! And... and there are files down there. Dozens of filing cabinets!"

Vance approached the jagged hole cautiously, keeping his gun raised. He knelt down, shining his light into the damp subterranean space. The beam revealed rows of steel filing cabinets, all labeled with neatly typed name tags dating back decades.

"Look at the top folder on that desk," Vance muttered, reaching down into the opening to grab a thick, manila folder covered in dust. He pulled it up, flicked open the metal clasp, and scanned the first typewritten page. His face instantly went completely pale.

"What is it, Sergeant?" the young officer asked, stepping closer.

"It's not just a family home," Vance said, his voice dropping to a stunned whisper. He looked up at Martha with absolute disgust. "This house is a registered adoption broker front. For the last thirty years, Martha Miller has been adopting troubled children from state agencies under false identities, collecting the state subsidies, and..."

"And weeding out the weak ones," Martha interrupted proudly, lifting her chin. "The state doesn't care about orphans, officer. They just want them off the books. I gave them purpose."

Elena felt a surge of pure, blinding rage eclipse her fear. She gently handed Leo over to the young officer, stood up tall despite her cuffed wrists, and walked straight toward Martha. Before anyone could stop her, Elena raised her hands and slapped Martha across the face with a force that echoed off the kitchen walls.

"You monster," Elena snarled, tears burning in her eyes.

Martha didn't flinch. She slowly turned her head back, her lip bleeding slightly, and whispered a chilling final warning that froze the room.
