Chapter 8: The Garage Floor

The next morning brought a gray, overcast sky that matched the grim determination shared by Martha and David. At precisely eight o'clock, Officer Ramirez’s patrol car pulled back into the driveway, accompanied by a municipal utility van and a compact seismic scanning unit operated by two plainclothes investigators from the state district attorney’s office.

Martha stood on the grass in her usual pink shirt, though today she wore sturdy denim jeans instead of capri pants and heavy work boots borrowed from her late husband’s collection. David stood beside her, fully dressed in a durable canvas work shirt and heavy trousers, holding a heavy-duty sledgehammer he had retrieved from his truck.

"We have the warrant to inspect the structural integrity of the detached garage slab," Officer Ramirez announced as she stepped out of her cruiser, clipboard in hand. "The district attorney reviewed the conduit box and Mrs. Gable’s sworn testimony regarding the 2014 industrial discrepancies. We are cleared to break ground."

Martha nodded, leading the investigators toward the small wooden garage at the edge of her property. She unlocked the heavy padlock with a key that trembled slightly in her grasp, pulling the corrugated metal door upward with a sharp, metallic screech. Inside, the space smelled of dust, old motor oil, and dry cedar wood.

The investigators immediately set up their seismic equipment, rolling a heavy sensor pad across the cracked concrete floor. Within minutes, the digital monitor hooked up to a laptop displayed a clear, high-resolution subsurface scan of the foundation.

"Look at this," the lead investigator, a sharp-eyed woman named Agent Vance, pointed at the screen. "There is a void beneath the concrete slab. Approximately six feet down. It is not a natural sinkhole; it is a reinforced subterranean utility vault that was deliberately sealed off and covered with a double-pour concrete cap."

David stepped inside the dark garage, staring down at the grey floor where his brother had apparently walked ten years ago. "That is it. That is where Lucas’s signal terminal terminated on the night he vanished."

Officer Ramirez stepped up beside David, placing a hand near her radio just in case the vault contained structural hazards or hazardous materials. "We are going to need heavy excavation equipment to break through that concrete cap safely. We cannot just use a sledgehammer; the slab is reinforced with industrial rebar."

"My cousin runs a commercial demolition crew out of the county seat," Martha said without hesitation, pulling out her phone. "I will call him right now. Tell him it is an emergency priority."
