Chapter 6: The Brother in the Dark

Nicholas Blackwood smiled. It was the same charming, reckless smile that had seduced trust boards, bank presidents, and society heiresses for a decade, yet beneath it lay an emptiness that made the skin on Julian's neck crawl.
"Hello, little brother," Nicholas said, his voice echoing smoothly off the vaulted brick ceiling. "You've grown into the tux. Very dignified. Very... parental."
"You're dead," Julian said, not shifting an inch, his body forming a solid shield between the gun and the bench where Clara sat guarding Arthur.
"Death is an administrative technicality, Julian," Nicholas replied, stepping forward with measured, clicking footsteps. "A very useful one when three different offshore cartels want thirty million dollars that disappeared from the shipyard accounts. I had to let the name die so I could liquidate the real estate once Father finally passed."
Nicholas tilted his head toward the old man, his eyes narrowing with bitter annoyance. "Except the old man wouldn't die. He lingered. He hired sweet little Florence Nightingale here, started making charitable donations to maritime relief funds, and was preparing to sign a revised will transferring the entire family portfolio to an independent trust."
"So you came back to finish it," Julian said.
"I came back to claim my property," Nicholas corrected sharply. "The compound in the IV was potassium chloride. Simple. Undetectable in a man whose heart was already failing. If Clara hadn't come up those stairs twenty minutes early, it would have looked like a peaceful departure in his sleep. The oil was meant to delay her. She wasn't supposed to survive the fall."
Clara stared at Nicholas from the bench, her jaw trembling not with fear, but with profound, burning disgust. "He is your father. He gave you everything you ever asked for."
"He gave me expectations," Nicholas spat, the charming mask cracking to reveal the raw, narcissistic rot beneath. "He gave me a company drowning in pension liabilities and told me to preserve the family name while you played street fighter in Boston. Everything in this house belongs to me. Including the launch at the end of the tunnel."
"You won't make it across the state line, Nicholas," Julian said evenly. "Walter sealed the perimeter. The local sheriff knows you disappeared."
"Walter is a dinosaur who still believes in primogeniture," Nicholas laughed dismissively. "And the sheriff thinks I'm fish food in the Atlantic. Once this tunnel is cleared, I take the launch to a freighter waiting four miles offshore. By dawn, I'm outside territorial waters with Arthur's bearer bonds, and you can explain to the coroner why two bodies were found in the cellar."

Nicholas raised the pistol, aiming the barrel directly at Julian's forehead.
"Put the old man down, Julian," Nicholas whispered. "Step aside."
