Chapter 3: The Empty Drawer

When Julian stepped back into the kitchen, the atmosphere had shifted from tense to predatory. Elena was standing by the mahogany desk tucked into the corner of the breakfast nook, her posture rigid. She had changed out of her silk top into a simple black cardigan, as if preparing for a journey or a battle. On the counter beside her lay a stack of old photographs and a folded legal document, its edges yellowed with age.

"You're digging through things that don't concern you, Julian," Elena said without turning around. Her voice was disturbingly level now, stripped of the hysteria from earlier.

"Everything in this house concerns me, Elena. Especially when a stranger's name is being whispered behind closed doors while I'm miles away," Julian said, walking slowly toward the counter. He stopped a few feet away, keeping his distance to assess her demeanor. "Maya told me he was here on Tuesday."

Elena finally turned, her dark eyes flashing with a mixture of resentment and deep-seated exhaustion. She picked up one of the photographs and tossed it across the marble island. It slid across the smooth surface and stopped right near Julian's hand. He looked down. It was a faded Polaroid taken on a windy beach, featuring a much younger Elena laughing beside a tall, broad-shouldered man with messy brown hair and piercing eyes. On the back, written in familiar cursive, were the words: Forever yours, Michael. July 2015.

"He was my fiancé before I ever met you, Julian," Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "He didn't die in a climbing accident like I told your family. He went away. And now he’s back, demanding things I simply cannot give him."

"What could he possibly demand from you after all these years?" Julian asked, picking up the photograph and studying the man's face. The features were strikingly ordinary, yet there was something hauntingly familiar about the jawline, something that made Julian's stomach drop.

"Money, silence, a piece of a life I built after he abandoned me," Elena spat out, crossing her arms defensively. "He thinks he has a claim to everything we've worked for. But he doesn't know the half of it."

"If he's just an ex-fiancé looking for a payout, why did you panic when I said his name?" Julian pressed, his eyes narrowing as he stepped closer. "People don't look like they've seen a ghost just because an old boyfriend knocks on the door. There's something else, Elena. What aren't you telling me?"

Elena looked away, biting her lower lip hard enough to draw a faint line of white. The silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating, until the sudden chime of the front doorbell shattered the quiet.
