Chapter 14: Moving Day

The morning of the move arrived with crisp autumn sunshine filtering through the apartment windows. The boxes were packed neatly near the entryway, containing Martha’s clothes, her favorite books, and the leather-bound photo album of the farm.
Jessica wore her grey button-down shirt and black pants, moving efficiently around the apartment to ensure nothing was left behind. David was loading the trunk of his car with the final boxes, his expression somber yet resolute.
Martha stood near the kitchen counter, wearing a comfortable beige cardigan and a patterned dress, looking around the space one last time. There was no spilled milk on the linoleum today; the floor was spotless, gleaming under the morning light.
“Are you ready, Mom?” David asked softly as he walked back into the kitchen.
Martha took a deep, natural breath, looking at her son and then turning her gaze to Jessica. “I am ready, David.”
The car ride to Oakridge Manor was quiet, filled with the gentle hum of the radio and the steady rhythm of their breathing. When they arrived, the staff greeted them warmly, guiding Martha to her new, sunlit room overlooking a secure garden filled with chrysanthemums and maple trees.
Unpacking took less than an hour. They placed the framed photographs on the dresser, arranged her books on the shelf, and laid out her favorite blanket on the bed. It wasn't home yet, but it had all the makings of a safe, dignified space.
As the afternoon light began to wane, David and Jessica prepared to leave. Martha stood by the window, looking out into the garden with a quiet serenity.
“You’ll come visit?” Martha asked, not turning around.
“Every Sunday, Mom. Without fail,” David promised, stepping forward to wrap his arms around her in a fierce, loving embrace.

Jessica stepped up next to them, placing her hand gently over Martha’s arm. “And I’ll bring you the good tea every week.”
Martha turned and smiled, her pale blue eyes clear and bright. “Drive carefully, my children.”
