Chapter 6

The morning sun cast long, distorted shadows across the manicured lawn of Julian’s suburban apartment complex. Clara sat in the passenger seat of Sarah’s car, her knuckles white as she gripped the handle of the passenger door. Marcus, the paralegal, had arranged for an official civil standby—a local police officer would accompany Clara inside to retrieve the remainder of her personal belongings, ensuring Julian couldn’t weaponize her sudden departure against her.
A patrol cruiser was already parked in the visitor's slot. Officer Henderson, a weathered officer with a calm demeanor, leaned against his car door waiting for them. Clara stepped out, smoothing down her dark denim jeans and a simple black jacket she had borrowed from Sarah. She felt hyper-aware of every sound, every movement, her body bracing for the inevitable confrontation.
“Ready?” Officer Henderson asked, giving her an encouraging nod.
Clara swallowed hard and nodded. They walked up the paved path together, Sarah trailing a few paces behind to offer moral support. When Officer Henderson pressed the doorbell, the chime echoed loudly through the hollow interior of the apartment. A minute passed before the lock clicked. The door swung open, revealing Julian in a gray cotton t-shirt and sweatpants, his hair slightly disheveled. His expression shifted instantly from annoyance to calculated surprise when he saw Officer Henderson standing beside his estranged wife.
“Clara,” Julian said smoothly, stepping back to widen the entryway. “You could have just called. There was no need to drag the police into this.”
“I’m here to collect my personal documents, my laptop, and my clothes, Julian,” Clara said, her voice steady and devoid of the fear he expected to find there. She stepped past him into the foyer, refusing to shrink under his intense gaze.
Julian’s jaw tightened, his eyes darting toward Officer Henderson before locking back onto Clara. “You’re making a huge mistake, Clara. Running away like a delinquent isn't going to solve our marital issues. My mother is upstairs resting; she was deeply distressed by your behavior.”

“Save the performance for someone else, Julian,” Clara replied coldly, walking purposefully toward the master bedroom.
The bedroom was precisely as she had left it days ago, though Helen’s scent of heavy lavender perfume lingered in the air. Clara wasted no time. She pulled a large duffel bag from the closet and began tossing in her remaining professional clothes, hard drives, sketchbooks, and the portfolio containing her design credentials. She noticed Julian lingering in the doorway, watching her with a dangerous mix of disbelief and simmering resentment. He was realizing, in real-time, that his control over her was slipping through his fingers permanently.
