Chapter 5

The door swung open with a soft sigh, revealing the silhouette of Elena framed by the dim amber light of the hallway sconces. She was still wearing the red silk dress from earlier that evening, though the straps were slightly askew and her blonde hair fell in tangled waves over her bare shoulders. In her right hand, she gripped a heavy silver letter opener, the metal catching the moonlight like the blade of a stiletto. Elena stepped quietly into the room, her eyes scanning the dark space, searching the bed and the corners with predatory intensity.

"I know you’re awake, Clara," Elena whispered, her voice laced with venom and exhaustion. She took a step further into the room, her heels clicking softly now that she had abandoned stealth for raw, desperate confrontation. "You can’t hide from me in this house. Marcus is asleep, Beatrice is deaf to the world behind her heavy doors, and nobody is coming to save you."

Clara remained motionless behind the heavy velvet drapes, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird, but her outward demeanor remained eerily calm. She had anticipated that Elena’s fragile composure would completely shatter under the weight of Marcus’s suspicion and the impending threat of ruin. Desperate people made desperate mistakes, and Elena was walking right into the final phase of Clara’s master plan.

"You think you’ve won, don't you?" Elena continued, talking to the empty air as she advanced toward the bed, slashing the letter opener through the darkness with erratic movements. "You think you can waltz in here with your fake bruised cheek and your innocent act and tear down everything we built? Marcus is mine. This estate is mine. We earned every penny of this life through blood and compromise, and I will not let a nobody destroy it overnight."

Clara silently withdrew the smartphone from her pocket, her thumb hovering over the recording icon. Every word Elena was speaking—every admission of guilt, every threat of violence, every confirmation of their shared conspiracy—was being captured in crystal-clear audio and instantly streamed to the same secure cloud storage currently being reviewed by the federal prosecutor's office. It was a masterclass in psychological trapping, letting the aggressor hang themselves with their own dialogue.

Elena lunged forward, stabbing the letter opener down into the pillows of the guest bed with brutal force, only to find them empty. She stumbled backward, gasping for breath, realizing too late that she was playing right into an unseen hand. "Where are you?" she hissed, spinning around in panic as the shadows seemed to close in on her from every direction.

"I’m right here, Elena," Clara said, stepping smoothly out from behind the drapes into the patch of moonlight. She didn't flinch, nor did she raise her voice. She simply stood tall, the beige cardigan draped over her shoulders like armor, looking down at the woman who had tried to break her. "And the federal marshals are already on their way."
